Ribs has always been a meat-lovers favorite. Although I'm not much of a meat-eater myself, I've found ribs to be irresistible. I've tried a lot of version but smoked ribs is an unexplored dish for me. So, I'm quite thankful that Big Daddy Jay's All American BBQ decided to offer it.
Together with Berylle and D, we drove all the way from Manila to Cubao just to visit Big Daddy Jay's All American BBQ. Due to the awful traffic contributed by the rainy weather and numerous road construction, we were so hungry when we arrived at the bright orange colored establishment of Big Daddy Jay's. We passed by two of their custom-built smokers by the parking space as we went in.
A tarpaulin outside indicates their store hours. They are closed on Mondays because its their smoking day. It is during this time that they smoke a week's supply of ribs for an approximate of six hours each. When the ribs are smoked, they can just heat it up before serving. With a growing demand for its ribs, they currently smoke around 80 ribs per week.
According to the owners, the restaurant was named after Big Daddy Jay, a southerner, who shared with them the southern american-style barbecue recipe for their smoked ribs.
Although not as spacious, its a nice and casual full-scale restaurant. Staffs are quick to set up out table upon entry. Their menu is located by the counter.
Although it only opened last April, a lot of food bloggers have visited them prior to ours. The positive remarks made us even more eager to try their Original Smoked Ribs.
Food
Original Smoked Ribs
It wasn't long until our Full Rack of Original Smoked Ribs was placed before us in a wooden chopping board. It comes with their special sauce.
We initially thought that the dark coating is
char-marks but upon first bite, we were proven wrong. It was actually a
flavorful, herby and peppery dried glaze. We were also amazed at the
size of the rib which I think is the pork shoulder part rather than the
usual back ribs. It was so lean and meaty yet so tender that chewing
every bit of it is so pleasurable. Each chunk was exploding in rich
smokey flavor. Although their special sauce is good, I personally
prefer it on its own. The bones became so soft
due to the long cooking process that we can't help but eat it too. By
the end of our meal, all our plates and the chopping board was swiped
clean.
We were told that you can order this for take out or in its frozen state for the same price. You can just grill or bake it to reheat. Since this is very far from our place, I'm considering purchasing one for out family parties because I really think its a must try!
Down Homes Sides
For sides D had the Buttered Rice (25 php) while Berylle and I consumed the bowlful of Mixed Veggies and Herbed Potatoes.
Pasta
The Tomato Basil Pasta was cooked al dente. It had a tangy tomato based sauce with a light hint of basil. Although it was good, it wasn't something I'd crave for.
Chicken Wings
The Honey Mustard had a sweet and zesty thick sauce which we all enjoyed. But, we found the native wings a bit skinny.
Dessert
Quite frankly, we were all so full that it even crossed our minds to just skip the dessert. How fortunate that we didn't! Aunt Wilma's Key Lime Pie is so heavenly! It's perfect blend of refreshing sweetness and citrus tartiness reminded me of the famous Sagada Lemon Pie I've had a few years back. It was the perfect palate cleanser. It's so sad that we only ordered a slice for sharing because it made us crave for more. It was so good that we were tempted to go back and take home some as soon as we reach the car. We finally decided that we'll just come back for this and the Original Smoked Ribs soon. But it didn't stop there since on the way home, we can't help but talked about how much we loved this and wished we knew who Aunt Wilma was!
Tsinoy Foodies Verdict
As early as now, I really have high hopes for Big Daddy Jay's All American BBQ. I'm really happy with the quality of their Original Smoked Ribs. I commend the owners for their passion as a foodie and eagerness to learn and improve as a new restauranteur.

Last week, I got dragged by fellow foodie friends to the Electrolux Discover-E Food Festival at the NBC Tent.
The ticket is called a food passport wherein there are 2 sections. On the top is a stamp collection area from the major sponsors. Beneath it is the stamps from the vendors when you purchase from them.
Some of the Sponsors
The major sponsors like Surf and Cif had games where you can win freebies. Unlike my friends who won a lot, I ended up with consolation prizes.
Just when I collected the major sponsor stamps to claim my free measuring cup, I was suddenly called out because I won the first prize in the raffle prize for a Meyer non-stick wok. Wow right?
The major sponsors like Electrolux, Pyrex, Meyer and Dole also offered their products at discounted prices up to 70% off. A friend even bought 3 Meyer pans to give away to her relatives.
Their was also a cook off. It was fun to watch because they had celebrity judge such as Chef Bruce Lim and Chef Rosebud as judges. The students who participated are skillful and competitive too.
Some of the Food Vendors
I've been reading good feed backs about Chef Tatung in both blogs and magazines. I was tempted to try it but I opted to save the chance in dining at its restaurant next time instead.
I love keseng puti but regretfully, I missed trying this out. =(
The concept of Chivogue Kitchen is interesting and interactive and their pricing is quite affordable. But, the presentation is not that enticing.
My Favorites
Double Delights has upgraded the fun in eating polvoron fun so I really admire their innovation. This is a good alternative for those who can't handle the heaviness and sweetness of most cupcakes like me.
Viveca's perfectly crunchy Green Tea Alfajores will surely allure your taste buds with its right blend of green tea fragrance and flavor.
Aeta Organics sells organics Aeta Hot Sauce and Hot Mani to provide a sustainable livelihood to Aeta communities. Thumbs up for this wonderful project!
I fell in love with Greek Yogurt when I first got to try it at the Yoghurt House in Sagada. I'm glad local companies like Hacienda Macalauan Inc can now produce one and sell it as a slightly cheaper price than imported once. Truth be told, as much as I want to eat it often, the price really hinders me a bit.
Ganavida Econaturales is an advocate for natural and organic local products. Although agriculture is no longer a major Philippine industry thanks to urbanization, I'm glad this industry is again thriving to grow.
Although not food related, I am always supportive of those who do help others like The Orange Project. I can't wait to volunteer for their upcoming projects. If you want to donate or volunteer for the projects, check out their fan page.
I also tried Mrs. Grahams macarons, Wing Box fried wings and Wrap Battle creative wraps, will write about them soon! The old favorites like Kashi Maki and Choco Atbp. were there too.
Overall, the event may not was extensive as other food exhibits but it was quite successful in introducing a wide variation of food vendors and also inspire the culinary students who will soon join the food industry.

Medical experts have known about the dangers of high cholesterol for many decades. It has associated with the development of a number of diseases that can lead to early death. The discovery of statin medications to lower cholesterol production in the body has been a great advance in the prevention of many diseases caused by high cholesterol.
Cholesterol comes in two forms, low-density lipoprotein (LDL) and high-density lipoprotein. LDL cholesterol is called “bad” cholesterol because it tends to remain in the body and sticks to blood vessel walls. HDL cholesterol is sometimes called the “good” cholesterol because it helps to flush excess amounts from the body. Blood tests can determine how much of these two cholesterol components are in the bloodstream. When the LDL rate exceeds a certain number, the person is said to have high cholesterol. High cholesterol can be caused by the foods people eat and can also be caused by genetic factors.
Sarah is a dietitian and love's handing out advice online as she knows that millions of people are too afraid to come in and ask questions. By writing about topics she hopes that everyone understands that many people suffer similar problems that are not to be ashamed about.
Understanding Cholesterol
Cholesterol is not bad in itself. The human body makes its own cholesterol, which is a waxy substance that is important for tissue repair, membrane fluidity and production of bile for digestion. High cholesterol affects millions of people throughout the world and contributes to early deaths due to cardiovascular diseases. The Good and the Bad
Cholesterol comes in two forms, low-density lipoprotein (LDL) and high-density lipoprotein. LDL cholesterol is called “bad” cholesterol because it tends to remain in the body and sticks to blood vessel walls. High cholesterol can be caused by the foods people eat and can also be caused by genetic factors.
Heart Disease
Normally, cholesterol flows freely through the body aiding in tissue repair and other physical processes. However, when too much cholesterol is available, it can sticks to the walls of blood vessels causing narrowing and blockage that can lead to heart disease. Some research suggests that this is more likely to occur when the blood vessel walls become inflamed by poor diet and a sedentary lifestyle. Whatever the true cause, keeping your cholesterol within the recommended range can help to keep your cardiovascular system in good health.Stroke
Just as the cholesterol can accumulate in the blood vessels of the heart, it can also create blockages of blood and oxygen to the brain. When blood cannot reach the brain properly, a stroke occurs. Brain cells are not fed by the blood supply, and they begin to die. Physicians routinely encourage their patients to lower their cholesterol levels to prevent these types of blockages from occurring.Diabetes
High cholesterol is also associated with the development of Type 2 diabetes. Type 2 generally occurs in people over the age of 40. It can contribute to heart disease and stroke as well as a number of other serious medical problems. Poor eating habits can cause high blood sugar levels. These in turn can cause an increase in LDL, the bad cholesterol. The LDL can become coated with blood sugar, which makes it harder for the cholesterol to be released from the body. These high levels of blood sugar and cholesterol can cause insulin resistance that may then develop into diabetes. I tend to forget a lot of details about my childhood. But, one of the sweetest moments in my life is recalling the days that my relatives would give us a pasalubong bag of Cadbury Dairy Milk Chocolates. As a chocoholic, I confess, my first love was with Cadbury Dairy Milk Chocolates.
As the elder sister, I would always be the one who will open each bar to share with my little sisters. My favorite is the Cadbury Dairy Milk Fruit & Nuts so it's the first one I always open among the bunch. On the other hand, my little sister is fan of the smooth and creamy Classic Cadbury Dairy Milk so its the next we open otherwise she'll pout.
Now that we're older, gone are the days when we received those kinds of goodies. But, Cadbury Dairy Milk Chocolates is still present in our lives and very much close to our hearts. Among our fridge's sweet treasures is a Cadbury Dairy Milk Chocolates bar. The variant available actually depends on which of us buys it. If it's me then for sure, it's Cadbury Dairy Milk Fruit & Nuts. If it's my little sister, its the Classic Cadbury Dairy Milk.
Sometimes, we try the other flavors too just to break the ice. So far we've tried the Cadbury Dairy Milk Cashew, Cadbury Dairy Milk Roast Almonds, Cadbury Dairy Milk Macadamia and just recently, the Cadbury Dairy Milk Cashew & Cookies. Although the usual nut combinations are good, I enjoyed the Cadbury Dairy Milk Fruit & Nuts the most because it's a mix match of smooth and creamy chocolate that melts in your mouth with nutty crunchiness and chewy raisins. The Cadbury Dairy Milk Cashew & Cookies is also interesting because I love both Cashew and chocolate cookies. They have other selections with fillings. We've tried the Cadbury Dairy Milk Caramelo once but it made us miss the nuts!

If you've been reading my posts, you'd know that I have an endless love affair with ice cream. For quite some time now, my dear friend Sumi has been raving about Jack Frost Premium Ice Cream. So one afternoon, The Foodies Circle, visited the humble abode of its creator Mr. Bonner Dytoc for some taste test. And, Sumi who has tried most of their flavors, was back for more. =p
Jack Frost Premium Ice Cream with a tag line "If you think you know ice cream, then it's time to get to know Jack", aims to offer ice cream with a better quality than the commercialized brands.
They offer ice cream in three sizes: Pint, Half Gallon and Gallon. Their flavors and pricing is segregated in two: Premium and Super Premium.
Although their pint looks smaller than the conventional ones you buy in the supermarket, you'd find that it contains non-airy ice cream that's compact so the container is completely filled up.
Up to this date, it currently offers 17 flavors. With its growing market, it continuously develops more flavors taking into consideration the requests of its customers.
Premium
I'll start with my favorite among all the flavors, Basil! I'll give this a perfect score for innovation and the right blend. It's cool with a fresh peppery basil taste that's not too overwhelming. Its nice sophisticated taste that's not represented by being plainly leafy was quite successful in serenading my taste buds.
The Silky Amber is actually Salted Butter Caramel. There's been a growing popularity for the Salted Caramel flavor in ice cream, gelato and froyo but this one comes with an additional of butter. I think the butter idea works because it neutralized the sweet rich taste of the caramel. I bet many would like this. But, since I have a low tolerance for rich flavors, I'd prefer an even lighter version.
Imagine the popular Wintermelon Milk Tea in creamy ice cream form and you have yourself the Wintermelon Delight. It's no surprise that this is one of their best sellers. We all gave an unanimous thumbs up for this too.
The Almonds Spice has a light almond base with hint of ginger spice. It has bits of the sugar coated ginger jelly candy.
Super Premium
I really like the thick, rich and cream cheesy consistency of the Oreo Cheesecake. For an Oreo lover like me, this is simply irresistible especially with tons of oreo crumbs.
I was quite surprised that the Strawberry Cheesecake had a lighter composition compared to the
Oreo Cheesecake. But, it was also good in its own way. I think this would have been better though if it had fresh tangy strawberry bits in it.
I took home a pint of Blueberry Cheesecake and they enjoyed it. Although we had other ice cream, this was quickly emptied. The sweetness is just right. But, I notice that this was more graham crumby than the two other cheesecake flavors I've tried. Perhaps, their mixing process doesn't guarantee that the ingredients are equally distributed. I loved it still though because I've always enjoyed eating graham crackers and crusts.
The Morning Rush is coffee ice cream with bacon bits. I found this quite intriguing because it comes with bacon. But upon tasting, an aromatic roasted coffee lingered in my mouth. I was not able to distinguish the taste of bacon at all even though I was chewing on the bacon bits. So I think the presence of the bacon is merely for its chewy texture only.
The Choco Glacier is a rich blend of sweet chocolate ice cream with bits of mint chocolate candy. Every one loved this because it has a wonderful cooling effect. Being accustomed to bitter sweet chocolate ice cream, this was a bit sweet for my preference though.
Probably my least favorite is the PBJ because its taste overwhelmed my taste buds. This is best enjoyed by eating it the local way with bread or monay.
The Energo is Milo ice cream with Pop Rocks coated in chocolate. I enjoyed this because I liked Milo and it was quite thrilling to experience the popping sensation at random.
Tsinoy Foodies Verdict
Jack Frost Premium Ice Cream is a promising home-based enterprise that offers unique signature flavors that will surely entice you. Each flavor has a different consistency depending on the ingredient so its best to try them out and find the one that soothes to your liking. I look forward to trying more of their variants.
To order, you can check their website for details. Products can be delivered through City Delivery and you can also purchase them at their tie-up stores like Yen Yen Taiwan Street Food and Lunchbox at Ronac Art Center. Note that to assure availability, please advise them with 2 days lead time.
