If there's one word to describe me on a usual day... it would be "Frazzled". (Now, you know why this author has maintained anonymosity even to the 1000th post!) So for a change how about I take a splendid time with fellow foodies and let The Frazzled Cook take charge.
If you've been reading my blogs, you'd know my philosophy on dining is for sharing. And, I really think that's why I love the Philippine foodie community the most. You get to meet so many people and everyone is just so warming and sharing. I guess that's why despite being a wallflower, I never worry about what it's like to go to one food event after another.
Now, I know there are non-foodie people. But, there are a lot of foodies so I consider it as one of the biggest mix of people. There are practically foodies from all walks of life.
So in a food event, you'll see so many foodies. There's the ordinary foodie like my long time IG friend Niel (which bothers me because he suddenly quit), social media influencer foodies, Zomato top reviewers as part of what they call Zomato Foodie Meet-up (Zomato FMU), Looloo top reviewers as part of what they call Looloo rendevous, food bloggers like me, media and more!
Oh and there's no exclusivity! One person can be a Zomato top reviewer, Loloo top reviewer, a social media influencer and a food blogger as well. I know others who are like that but I'm not. I am just you're ordinary food blogger who has a Zomato account but not much reviews on it so I don't usually get to join a Zomato FMU. I always intended to be more active as other bloggers on Zomaot though cause Zomato has a good incentive for bloggers with its Spoonback System. It allows bloggers to have a link to their blogs under every review. There's also a separate ranking category for bloggers. But since my work doesn't permit me to have much time to make more reviews, I would be excited to get rare Zomato FMU invites just so I can meet the top Zomato reviewers. This time is not different.
Food
So after some food styling and some food shots (which includes vlogging now to my surprise!) we got proceeded to our late lunch. I have to confess, I am a first time guest at The Frazzled Cook.

If you've been following my IG stories and IG posts, I've been having this coming-of-age thought all of a sudden. This may be funny because this is so easy for many but let me share with you something I've been promising myself since forever:
1. Learn photography - Yes, I don't know anything about it until now. But, every time I go to events and see someone really good especially my street photography mentor Sir Ted Claudio, I've been really wanting to learn.
My resolve: You see, I really have poor self-discipline so in order to start change, I have to make an indirect change to push me to go out of my normal and comfort practice. Thus, I sold my old camera real quick by selling it at a giveaway price. Testing out new cameras in manual mode. I am viewing more photos in IG and 500px.
2. Adopt a healthier lifestyle
My resolve: Subscribed to the nearest gym so I wouldn't have any excuse. As for diet, yes I eat more greens!
So I am happy to share that I happily devoured on this Herbal Chicken Salad with basic vinaigrette the most!

Pizza & Paella
Truffle Mushroom Pizza |
One of the special gestures made by The Frazzled Cook especially for us is to let us try the Truffle Mushroom Pizza. I felt like we hit the jackpot with this one because it was so rich in truffle flavor! Fellow truffle lovers, do try this when it officially becomes part of the menu.

Wagyu Salpicao (595 php) |
I recall when the whole "wagyu" craze hit Manila, I used to be so excited to have more and more of it. It was more premium than our local beef in terms of texture and price. Soon, my excitement faded as it was the same one after the other. But, guess what? When I popped one of these Wagyu Salpicao cube unto my mouth, it surprised me that it was not just the soft almost melting into your mouth sensation that got me popping one cube after another. It was every component of the dish: (1) the generous garlic bits, (2) the fragrant rich garlic taste that has seeped well into the oil were the wagyu cubes swam (3) the soft wagyu cubes (4) the salt, pepper and the balancing subtle hint of mint and bitterness from the dried parsley bits.
Chicken
Chicken Cordon Bleu (395 php) |
You can already diagnose my impression of the Chicken Cordon Bleu just by visual inspection.
Seafood
♥ Grilled Salmon with Mango Salsa (325 php) |
So moving on with a new found favorite salmon dish: the Grilled Salmon with Mango Salsa. This has pushed the usual Baked Salmon dish to second in rank.
Seafood Paella for 5 (600 php) |
♥ Paella Negra For 5 (635 php) |
While I hate to make comparisons, I must say this time the Paella Negra is the winner amongst the two. Every black grain delivered a rich squid ink taste. On some occassions, I even though that squid ink flavor is hardly detectable by the most delicate tongues. Yet, The Frazzled Cook has worked wonders by magnifying the taste making us wanting and worshipping such dish till the end of our meal.
Pasta
♥ Truffle Pasta Family (515 php) |
I would have been a devoted worshipper for the Paella Negra, if only we weren't served the Truffle Pasta. It was like a holy grail for both truffle lovers and bacon lovers and I happen to be both! It is actually mellow to the mouth as every component created a harmonious melody of flavors.
Overall, thank you The Frazzled Cook for the excellent hospitality and for Zomato for inviting me.

Toast Asian Kitchen & Tasting Room: Asian Fusion at Its Finest at Ayala Malls the 30th (Ortigas Pasig)
On a supposedly ordinary work day, I invited my workmates to have a dinner at Toast Asian Kitchen & Tasting Room at Ayala Malls the 30th.
A visit to Toast after work hours is one way to achieve that. Among the hundreds of dining places I've been too, I don't think I've encountered one with such homey, rustic, comfortable and elegant vibe like Toast.
Toast has an al fresco area with a coffee bar so it's like a cafe. I find the main dining area quite exquisite with Candelabras, sofas and wooden walls and a luxurious looking mirror.
And since Toast is open until 12 am, there's a bar too for alcoholic beverages. Because I really liked the interiors and feel. This is one of the rare moments that we rate a restaurant with a 5-star for ambiance!
Food
♥ Home Dumplings (169 php) |
The Home Dumplings are not ordinary dumplings. The filling is a combination of two kinds of minced meat: pork and beef making it rich in meaty goodness and so succulent.
♥ Salpicao (459 php) |
A must try it their Salpicao. The flavor is bold with a definitive garlic accent. What I like most about this is that despite being huge and chunky beef cubes, it was so tender and easy to chew. Every cube was also evenly cooked. Good job!
O-Tori
♥ Chicken Soft Bone (48 php), ♥ Chicken Gizzard (59 php) and ♥ Chicken Tail (59 php) |
I've been to many authentic Japanese restaurants just for Yakitori. And, I must say this beats most of them especially the Chicken Soft Bone. It was in the middle ground between crunchy and soft.
Mains Pasta
♥ Japanese Carbonara (345 php) |
I have always been biased towards red sauce pasta. Thus, I am rarely swooned by Carbonaras. But, wow I really liked Toasts' Japanese Carbonara that I even volunteered to finish this big bowlful.
Mains Beef
♥ Ribstock (888 php) |
Just to be clear, the Ribstock isn't the fall of the bone kind of ribs. It's tender but hangs on the bone with a nice chewiness as you pull it out. The BBQ and sesame sauce is probably inspired by my favorite Korean dish called Galbi Jim. If only this wasn't so heavy, I would have eaten more.
Mains Pork
♥ Charsiu on Scallion Fried Rice (595 php) |
The Charsiu on Scallion Fried Rice is not the char siu I grew up having. Char Siu is a Cantonese way of cooking pork barbecue. It is usually lean and dry. But, this one has an irresistible fat portion and the meat was so moist and pillow soft. I loved this more than the usual Char Siu.
Mains Poultry & Seafood
Orange Chicken (438 php) |
Served with a cup of plain rice (good for sharing!), the Orange Chicken is the tastiest among our orders. If you like sweet and citrusy dishes, then this will make you eat more rice!

Tsinoy Foodies Verdict
Toast Asian Kitchen & Tasting Room has really exceeded my expectations. I enjoyed the concept, the food quality and the interiors. If only this was nearer to my home or office, I would see this place as my frequent meeting place, dating venue, after-work chill out and a superb venue for family celebrations. The food serving is great for sharing so its best to visit this place with company. And with the cozy ambiance, I'm sure your guests will enjoy your company and the comforts of the place.

Rolls Republic: 75 Peso Breakfast with Brewed Sagada Coffee and Eat All You Can Rolls (Avenue of the Arts)
Residing near Malate, I have always been amused by the lively neighborhoods restaurants and cafes.
To my surprise, there's a cool concept that has been under my radar - Rolls Republic.
What brought my attention is Rolls Republic 1st Year Anniversary Speedy Rolls Festival where they offered Eat All You Can rolls buffet.
As soon as I went in, I found out they also offered Party Platters and they also offer delivery.
These are a good idea for potlucks!
I like the bright and casual vibe of the place. It looks clean and on point. I'd happily dine here for rolls and go. Or because they offer Free WiFi, I'd prefer hanging out at this place over the dark and cozy ambiance of famous coffee shops.
Rolls Republic has a giant map with spheres signifying their rolls conquering the world. And, their slogan comes in different languages.
Breakfast Rolls with FREE Coffee (6am to 10 am)
If only I was a student or a bar reviewee again, I would be here for breakfast and longer everyday. Not only do they offer FREE WiFi, they also offer an unbelievably priced breakfast with FREE Brewed Sagada Coffee. Another
thing that makes them an ideal breakfast place is that they open really
early! And, during that time there are a lot of parking spaces
available. And, did I mention how much I spent for this sossy-looking and very fulfilling breakfast? Only 75 php!!!
I also like their packaging. I have to admit, I don't usually buy grab to go snacks at convenient stores because the packaging doesn't look appetizing. Of course, it is also given that we know its been sitting there for days and I had a couple of experiences of buying spoilt food and moldy sandwiches. That's another great thing with Rolls Republic, the rolls are made fresh upon your order. They are very professional and prepare them very fast. They suggest that you consume your order within 24 hours for freshness. If you're lazy you can just buy this leave them on the freeze and eat them whenever you feel like it without need for reheating.
This Spam Omelette Roll is just the way I like it... with ketchup to boot. I am very impressed with how they were able to blend local rice like the malagkit to make the rice really sticky and composed similar to that of a high-quality sushi that makes use of Japanese rice.
Eat All You Can Rolls Buffet
Before moving on with the eat all you can rolls buffet, let me just share about the roll variants available at Rolls Republic that distinguishes them from other rolls concept:
They offer 4 kinds of Eat All You Can Sets so you can choose according to your preference or budget. The slices of their Eat All You Can is small than their usual roll (1 normal roll = 5 Eat All You Can piece) so you get to try more than variants in your 90 minute time limit. The size is actually the same as their Sushi Cake (the one with the carrot flower in the picture) which they sell by order for only 3,000 php and serves 30 people and their Party Platters.
2. Set B: Chicken/Pork 200 php/pax
I bet many of you are wondering how many rolls did I handle in our 90 minute seating? I went there very hungry and only handled 20 rolls. Think you can beat that? The rolls were heavier than I thought. But, the best thing about the experience is we didn't feel overwhelmed or "Umay" even though our bellies were very stretched because the variants are really appetizing.
Tsinoy Foodies Verdict
Rolls Republic is offers great a dine-in, cafe, breakfast place and grab and go concept. The pricing is very reasonable so much that it can be an everyday pleasure and convenient food. This is indeed one of the underrated hidden places in Malate that deserves more glamour than it currently has.

Eat All You Can Rolls Buffet
Before moving on with the eat all you can rolls buffet, let me just share about the roll variants available at Rolls Republic that distinguishes them from other rolls concept:
- First, they do not offer Japanese sushi with raw ingredients. All their ingredients are freshly cooked. While I also enjoy sushi with raw ingredients, I agree that this is a good idea since I have friends who don't eat raw. And, some can't eat raw. I mean they really can't. In fact, my realization comes with a story. Before I didn't believe that some people can't eat raw so I used to force my ex to eat sushi and sashimi with me. And to my surprise, his body would involuntarily reject the raw ingredients as he has to barfs them just a few minutes after intake. After the third consecutive time, I gave up making him eat raw. =p
- Second, their rolls are international cuisine inspired. Most of their rolls are unique as they are creatively concocted by their very own chef. Genius!
