Kumori Japanese Bakery: Toyohashi Pudding in 3 Flavors (Landmark Makati)
Makati, Metro Manila, Philippines
Every since the family has tried Kumori Japanese Bakery, we've been a fan! Their Signature Hanjuku Cheesecake has been our first choice for pasalubong whenever in SM Makati or Landmark. Recently, I discovered that Kumori has an equally awesome product which is their Toyohashi Pudding.
As much as we Filipinos love Leche Flan, the Japanese love their Purin, their version of egg custard. In Japan, you can buy them at convenient stores, supermarkets and train stations. When we were kids, we used to buy them at Japanese grocery stores in Little Tokyo and Cartimar too. But, after trying many brands, we can't seem to find one that satisfies us to buy again.
As the name implies, I guess this pudding receipe is from Toyohashi in Japan. Kumori's secret in making these delicious Toyohashi Pudding is baking them precisely making use of farm fresh eggs and premium buttermilk cream.
Each of the different flavors has a distinct feature. The Toyohashi Pudding Matcha has a bold matcha flavor. It was not sweet at all. It's not flawlessly smooth as you can feel the fine matcha powder subtly which was added a sensational pleasure to the tongue. The Toyohashi Pudding Chocolate is so good! It was so dark and rich and melts in your mouth. I really can't decide which is of the two is the best for me. I'm completely torn. LOL!
My little sister loves the Toyohashi Pudding Original. This is the best for her. If you like the classic sweet caramel sauce, then the Toyohashi Pudding Original. Plus, it has a perfect smooth, silky, creamy and melts in your mouth texture that beats the others.

Rosanjin Japanese Restaurant: Kaminabe, Tobanyaki and More (SM Mega Fashionhall)
Mandaluyong, Metro Manila, Philippines
In 2014, Rosanjin Japanese Restaurant opened in
SM Mega Fashion hall to offer affordable modern Japanese meals.
The name Rosanjin is inspired by the famous potter, painter and gourmet chef.
Thus, you can tell from its namesake that Rosanjin is particular with its food, interior, service and even the kitchenware they use.
Where else can you find Japanese umbrellas hanged on the ceiling?
Food
Vegetables
Starting with a delicious yet healthy Kani Salad.
But, if you want to go out of the ordinary, I highly recommend the Tofu Salad. The silken soft tofu bricks, tomatoes, bonito flakes, nori, green onions with sweet and sour sesame dressing and a sprinkle of lemon may seem unappealing at first, but try it and you'll be as amazed as we were.
Sushi
The California Roll is a common favorite but I'd pass up on this and go for the specialties.
Tobanyaki
What really sets Ronsajin a notch higher than the typical
Japanese places is their specialty Tobanyaki and Kaminabe. The
Tobanyaki is the modern style of cooking teppanyaki. It literally means "to roast on a earthen ware".
I like the concept because it's fun and entertaining to watch as you food gets cooked right infront of you. And the best part is, I'd like to believe that food especially these succulent juicy soft Australian Rib Steak are at optimal as we ate them as soon as they were sizzling and cooked to our preferred wellness. If you can't time then, don't worry as you have your own personal server to assist you.
I'm usually a beef more than meat person. But, the Chicken Cheeseyaki can't be pushed aside either.
There's just something about the melted cheese and flavorful sauce that made the Chicken Cheeseyaki everyone's top choice.
Seafood lovers will also rejoice with the Salmon Butteryaki. Thinly sliced, this cooks pretty fast so pay attention.
I have a confession to make, I ate most of Buri Teriyaki! I love Hamachi Sashimi, but this is even better.
The Jumbo Scallop Butteryaki is a must try! Imagine huge fresh scallops topped with uni and roe swimming in butter and sizzling before you're eyes... Yeah! I'm drooling right now at just the thought of it.
Kaminabe
Another specialty is their kaminabe which literally translate to paper hot pot. This is the first time I've tried this unique Japanese style of cooking. Can you believe that it uses ordinary paper and it doesn't get burned by the flame beneath it? According to the owner Mr. Ken, the sukiyaki here in the Philippines is usually tweaked to be sweeter and more watery than in Japan. But, I liked their Sukiyaki Kaminabe has a mild sweetness so you can still appreciate the natural taste of the other ingredients.
The Seafood Kaminabe has a soy based broth which I liked more than the sweet sukiyaki broth. See how they don't scrimpt on ingredients? There's jumbo scallop, large shrimp, thick buri slices and veggies.
If you're a miso broth lover, the Shrimp Kaminabe is for you.
Dessert
The Green Tea Pudding topped with red beans is a great meal-ender.
Order the Apple and Cheese Gyoza for sharing.

It was a late after meeting with my high school best friend. My lactose intolerant belly is in a grouchy mood after I loaded it up with 4 glasses or 16 scoops of ice cream during my lunch at Vikings the previous day. My friend sympathetically let me choose where we'd have lunch. And, we agreed on Kenji Tei Ramen House since pork seemed an anti-allergenic choice.
I guess the rush hour has passed since it was the only time I've seen it without a waiting line. It's quite spacious with traditional plain square wooden tables and chairs.

Yaki Gyoza (195 php) |
We ordered the Original Gyoza as our centerpiece for sharing. We've grown accustomed to that sharing routine through the years.
The gyoza is delicious. The dimsum skin is perfect. It was thin and soft and was neither too moist nor dry. The pork filling is juicy and savory as well.
