Wai Ying Dimsum: Quick and Affordable Chinese Fastfood (EGI Taft Tower Manila)
Taft Avenue, Manila, Metro Manila, Philippines
I've been to Wai Ying Fastfood in Binondo before. But, this is the first time I've tried Wai Ying Dimsum in EGI Taft Tower.
It has a dimsum-making area upfront so you can't see the dining area until you enter EGI Taft Tower. I'm told that they make them 3 times a day so if you're dining during that time, you might catch and watch it.
Like most Chinese fastfood places, the ambiance is simple as it is designed for eat and go.
Food
Congee
As it is the rainy season, the Beef Congee is my recommendation for a warm, heart and fulfilling soul food.
My companions all loved the Lemon Chicken. This is a great alternative to the usual sweet and sour dishes.
The Curry Beef Brisket here is different from the one in Binondo. This is lighter and my friends liked it that way.
The Sweet or Sour Pork is as expected a hit among my friends. I personally find it too sweet for me just like the Lemon Chicken but that's because I'm not too much of a sweet foodie.
You can order the fish fillet with three kinds of sauce: Black Tausi, Sweet and Sour Sauce and Cream and Corn Sauce. Selection depends on your preference. If you like it salty, pick Black Tausi. If you like it sweet, pick the Sweet and Sour Sauce. If you like it sweet and creamy, there's the Cream and Corn Sauce. If you're with kids, I'd suggest this for them.
The Asado is sweet, savory and tender. This is a classic favorite for many.
The Soy Chicken is my favorite at Wai Ying Dimsum especially with their special sauce.
The Fried Rice is my little sisters favorite at Wai Ying Dimsum. She can eat this alone and everyday.
Dimsum
Of course, we wouldn't dine in at Wai Ying Dimsum without ordering dimsum. My favorite is their Hakaw. I used to visit Wai Ying Dimsum with an old friend and order Hakaw and their Beef Chongfan which is the best in the world according to my friend. My least favorite is the Japanese Siomai which taste a bit off to me.
My friends were new to the concept of the Hot Salad Roll. If you haven't tried this, try it and you might just love it like they did. I personally like the Seafood Roll more.
Drinks
Tsinoy Foodies Verdict
Wai Ying Dimsum has already gained recognition as a Chinese Fastfood favorite of Filipinos and Tsinoys alike. I can't think of an alternative in the same league in the same area. Can you?

Masuki Since 1930: Affordable Chinese Noodle Soup Mami (SM Mall of Asia MOA)
Pasay, Metro Manila, Philippines
The family has two favorite affordable restaurants in SM Mall of Asia: El Pollo Loco and Masuki. Since I've shared about the former, this time I'll proceed with the latter.
Masuki is located right next to El Pollo Loco. The sign is huge so it's easy to spot.
This is just a branch as the original pioneer one established since 1930 is in Chinatown. According to my mom is used to be Ma Mon Luk then Ma Kong.
The dinning area is simply but clean-looking.
Food
Short Orders
The Pork Siomai is one of the best siomai for us. Just look at its size and a bite of it will confirm that it's pure pork without any extenders.
Mami
If you enjoy light tasting broth or want your broth to taste dominantly of Masuki's special sauce, the
Wonton Chicken Mami may be a good choice for you. They are quite generous with their ingredients. The chicken is tender enough. And, the wonton is as chunky but small in size compared to their Pork Siomai.
I always prefer the heaviest and most extravagant variant available so the Beef Chicken Wonton Mami is always my choice.
A lot of people use the Special Sauce as a dip for their noodles like eating the Japanese soba or tsukemen. A lazy one like me, would scoop some this into my bowl. To tell you the truth, their broth is too light for me but I don't mind having it when dining with the family.
Tsinoy Foodies Verdict
Masuki Since 1930 has built its own style and brand with its Special Sauce as the key factor. It's good, unique and affordable so I can see that its success will continue on in the coming years.

Ling Nam Wanton Parlor & Noodle Factory: Lugao Congee for Breakfast (Binondo T. Alonzo Sta Cruz Manila)
Binondo, Manila, Metro Manila, Philippines
I sometimes still wonder how I managed to wake up so early during my pre-college years. For me, early is before 10 am and I could say the same for the rest of the family. There are only a few instances that could get us up at 5:30 in the morning and one of those is Ling Nam Wanton Parlor & Noodle Factory.
This humble place along T. Alonzo Sta. Cruz has been my mom's favorite breakfast place since she was young. And, it's still her favorite place up until now.
As soon as you step in, you can already sniff the pleasant scent of their Lugao.
The place is small but it has a second floor. Upon, taking our order, we were given our complimentary hot tea.
Food
Lugao (Morning Only: 5:30 am to 8 am)
The Lugao are only available from 5:30 am to 8 am so be sure to come early for it. They may even ran out of it before 8 am. My brother's choice is the bountiful Halo-Halo Lugao. It has everything: bola-bola, liver, kidney, chicken and fish fillet.
My favorite is the Liver & Kidney Lugao. This is not for everyone though, it has a hint of the fuzzy organ taste that some people dislike.
The Chicken Lugao is a popular choice because chicken broth is always appealing.
The broth is mild so mixing the egg before it's completely cooked together with the lugao is vital for me.
My mom loves the Fish with Bola which is another great choice.
Dimsum
We always order their Pork Siomai which is more chunky and porky than other commercialized ones.
Tsinoy Foodies Verdict
Ling Nam Wanton Parlor & Noodle Factory will always be our favorite lugao or congee place. I don't even like congee but this can get me off my comfty bed in a flash. We also buy their packed noodles and use it for cooking at home.

Pearl River Cafe: Amazingly Priced Cantonese Dimsum (Trinoma)
Quezon City, Metro Manila, Philippines
It's been a while since I last found myself roaming around this side of Trinoma Mall so I'm surprised to find out that Pearl River Cafe has replaced Dragon Chef.
The facade is down-right simple like a typical Chinese casual dining restaurant.
Inside were wooden chairs and tables with a shelf of ceramics and beautiful drop lights.
Dimsum
The Steamed Crab Roe & Shrimp Shaomai is really good. You can really tell by the taste and texture that it was prepared using quality ingredients without extenders.
Dessert
The Steamed Bum with Custard Paste & Salted Egg Yolk is sharpd like a porcupine. But, not to worry since ever its spiked as pillow soft and fun to chew!
Unlike the common desserts, this is not overly sweetened. The buns with custard paste are light, mildly sweet and dominated by salted egg yolk flavor. And, could you believe that this is only 65 php? What a bargain!
Tsinoy Foodies Verdict
Pearl River Cafe serves amazingly priced Cantonese dimsum, noodles, congee and more. If only this is nearer to our home, I'm sure this is the kind of restaurant that my family would frequent. Even though I'm half-Cantonese, I have not tried most of the dishes they offered so I'd really love them out on my next visit.

The best perks of staying at Widus Hotel and Casino is having the complimentary breakfast buffet at Salt Restaurant. Upon entry, I was already excited by the numerous diners who seemed happy with their breakfast.
Salt Restaurant has a grand interior that is befitting for the main restaurant of the first and only five-star hotel in Pampanga. Its a 120-seater restaurant with half of the area allocated for its buffet selections.
I have only tried a few hotel breakfast buffets. But, as of the moment, it has the widest breakfast buffet selection I have ever encountered. The buffet is offered from 6 am to 10 am. Staffs will inform you at around 15 minutes before 10 am that it is the last call. Gosh! I was so giddy when I saw the frozen yogurt machine. Now, shall we proceed...
Food
Cereal Station
Pastry Station
They have a lot of pastry selections from the basic breads to the sophisticated danish ones. I tried the Hard Rolls and Blueberry Muffins. They have this cool rotating toaster where you get to drop your pastry and see it toasted and drop at the other end. I used that for my rolls assisted by a staff. That's another plus for Salt. All stations have an assigned staff so assistance is instantaneous.
Pastry Spread
The popular choice, as I noticed, is the Chocolate Syrup.
Cheese Station
On the cheeseboard are slices of Cheddar Cheese and Mozzarella Cheese.
Salad Station
You can make your own salad or choose a salad already prepared.
I opted for the Apple Salad which has a mix of red and green apples which seemed like a great choice as it was delicious!
Kimchi Station
The Kimchi is really good. I guess it has to be as the hotel is partly owned by Koreans and most of their clients are Koreans.
Waffle and Pancakes Station
There is an interactive Waffle and Pancakes Station were you can have freshly cooked waffles and pancakes and choose from honey or maple syrup (I'd like to note that it was an excellent Grade A maple syrup).
I loved my Waffles which I drizzled with maple syrup that I had to return for another.
Dimsum Station
I have a really high standard when it comes to Dimsum. I am rarely impress with dimsums served in buffet. Wow! Their Siomai is really good. It belongs to the league of top-notch expensive Chinese Restaurants like Li Li's Restaurant or Gloria Maris.
Shabu Shabu Station
At the Shabu-Shabu Station, you are entitled to chose you toppings and sauces and then hand it over to the chef so he can cook it in their flavorful broth. You can come for it after a few minutes. I'm really glad they have this station. =)
This is one of the best Shabu-Shabu I've had. Their ingredients are really high quality. I think this is at par with Tao Yuan and other Hot Pot specialized restaurants.
Main Course
Here are some of the main course, which I didn't get to try. Others are on my plate. =)
My Plate
Some of the main courses I tried are: ♥ Sausage, ♥ Rattoutille, Pesto Pasta, Fish Fillet and ♥ Tapa. All of them were good!
Frozen Yogurt Station
As for the Frozen Yogurt, unfortunately it ran out at 9 am. The staff informed me that they had no more plans of refilling since its an hour away from the end time so I missed it. =(
Fresh Fruits Station and Juice Station
They also serve Brewed Coffee upon request.
