I don't kow why I find it difficult to conform to regularity and routines. Can you believe that I can't even wake up at the same time in the morning? But, recently I've been learning from my seniors at work the art of appreciating the comforts of routine, regularity and familiarity. So when at Shangri-la Plaza, I reckoned to dine at the time-tested Kettle instead of other new food joints that I could try.
Ironically, what I expect to be ordinary turned out not so ordinary as I spotted two familiar groups having lunch there as well. Talk about coincidence!
Food
Salads
♥ Smoked Salmon Salad (289 php)
As a healthy portion of my meal, I ordered the Smoked Salmon Salad. I don't intend to elaborate on how I love greens and smoked salmon. Just finding out how I find eating salads like this is comforting is surprising enough for many.
Soups & Appetizers
Clam Chowder (259 php)
Apart from salads, I love soups. Being easily cold, soups have always been something that brings me comfort. Among all cream-based soups, Clam Chowder is my second favorite. Kettle makes them hearty and flavorful just the way I like it.
Main Course
♥ Buttermilk Fried Chicken (559 php)
Tsinoy Foodies Verdict
I never thought I'd like Buttermilk Fried Chicken before I encountered one from Kettle. I bet I'd come back even more just for it.

Gyu-Kaku Japanese Barbecue Restaurant: Yakiniku Dinner (Shangrila East Wing)
Metro Manila, Philippines
Gyu-Kaku Japanese Barbecue Restaurant is a Japanese Yakiniku concept that began in the Japan in 1996 and has now over 650 stores world wide.
The interiors were really nice and inviting.
After ordering, they prepared the charcoal grill.
Food
Salad
The Tofu and Avocado Salad is one of the best Japanese-inspired salad we've tried. The avocado cubes and creamy sesame dressing is wonderful.
The Horenso Salad is good because we loved the crunchy garlic flakes.
Of course, the highlight of our dinner is the Yakiniku. They have two dipping sauces for the Yakiniku.
Vegetables
Selected Beef by Gyu-Kaku
For the Harami, we could choose between 4 blends: Tare, Shio, Miso and Spicy. We opted for the Tare which delivered a sweet and salty flavor. It is a soy marinade with ginger, miso, fruit juice garlic and sesame oil.
Since the serving portion is small, we also ordered another Harami in Miso. It was a red sweetened miso and soy bean paste.
Chicken
We also had the Chicken Thigh Fillet in Tare and Shio. I guess we loved the Tare because we liked it even with chicken meat. The Shio is a slightly sweetened white soy sauce with salted sake, garlic and ginger. I think it's good if the meat is special.
Seafood
The best among our order is the Norweigan Salmon Foil. We ordered 2 of these!
Noodles
The Ishiyaki Udon (Chicken) is delicious. It was exploding with tasty goodness and the texture of the noodles is chewy.
Desserts
For dessert, we had the Milk Pudding. It is an interesting creamy dessert. We love it!
Tsinoy Foodies Verdict
Our Gyu-Kaku Yakiniku experience is good. The quality of the meats and other ingredients is superb. We also liked their sauce blends. The only drawback is the price and small serving portions.

P. F. Chang's Philippines: Dining at a Modern Chinese Bistro (Shangri-La Plaza East Wing)
Metro Manila, Philippines
P.F. Chang's arrived in the Philippines sometime three years ago. It was formerly in Alabang and Fort Bonifacio Global City and now, it is in Shangri-La Plaza East Wing.
There was a lot of rave about this at first. But, after all the publicity, the fame toned down. Since we have tried almost all restaurants in that wing, we figured we'd give it this US Asian-themed Chinese Bistro a try.
Food
Starter
The Seared Ahi with Wasabi Guacamole was really good! In fact, because of this starter, we felt very optimistic and excited for the upcoming dishes that we ordered.
The Vietnamese Lemongrass Chicken Spring Rolls was just okay. I guess I was expecting the lemongrass chicken to stand out but it didn't.
Dimsum
We were really disappointed with the Xiao Long Bao. Just look at it. The soup has already escaped. And, because of that this is by far the worst Xiao Long Bao we've had yet.
Soups
The Hot & Sour Soup is my all-time favorite soup. For me, this is passable.
The Egg Drop Soup is a better choice if I had to choose between the two.
Salads
The Chicken Chopped Salad has two options for dressing: Ginger or Sesame-Vinaigrette. We chose the former and it was a great choice!
Chicken
The Kung Pao Chicken is our family favorite dish so we have tried many versions. This was good but we've had better.
We enjoyed the Singapore Street Noodles. But, price-wise, it is one expensive noodle dish.
Tsinoy Foodies Verdict
Sad to say, I failed to appreciate the why P. F. Chang's beings a US Chinese bistro chain have to be brought here in the Philippines. Being in an Asian country where there are a lot of Chinese and China, Hongkong and Taiwan being our neighboring countries, I think there are many better options already found here.
