Tsukiji Restaurant: Freshly Flown Seafood from Tsukiji Market to Manila Since 1989 (Makati City)
Makati, Metro Manila, Philippines
Tsukiji Restaurant has been renowned since 1989 for serving the finest quality sashimi and sushi which uses fresh seafood flown directly from the Tsukiji Market in Japan.
Though considered a higher-end Japanese restaurant based its premium quality and price point, preserved its traditional interiors, giving its long-time customers a nostalgic feel of its humble beginning.
Food
With the freshest selection of seafood specially prepared by its very own Master Sushi Chef Toshiro Okajima who trained in a sushi shop in Tokyo, it would be a sin not to order any sushi and sashimi.
Sushi
We ordered the Tokujo Nigiri which appears to be the crown jewel of their sushi offering. Tsukiji's Nigiri or hand-rolled sushi are made from specially imported Koshihikari Rice from Ounuma, Nigata Prefecture. The Tokujo Nigiri platter includes 9 pieces of premium sushi and 3 pieces of maki subject to availability. We got a premium mix of Nigiri: Hontoro or fatty tuna belly, Chutoro or tuna belly, Kampachi or amberjack, Hamachi or yellow tail, Toro Salmon or salmon belly, Ika or squid and Ebi or prawns. The 3 pieces of Tekka Maki or tuna roll felt like ornamental addition to the platter since they were not as special as the Nigiri selections.
Hamachi Sashimi or yellow tail is our family favorite. We never missed out on ordering it whenever it is available.
Chirashi Sushi
Daimyo (1,800 php) |
All of their Chirashi Sushi selections comes with clear soup. The Daimyo with premium sashimi selections (2-5 slices each) of Maguro or tuna, Tako or octopus, Ika, Hamachi, Salmon, Kani or crabstick, Shime Saba or marinated mackarel, and Ikura or Salmon Caviar is the most affordable choice. Because it is a big bowl, it can already good for two.
Pork
The Gyoza or pan fried pork dumplings were cooked in the traditional way. We were quite pleased with the burst of savory juiciness from each bite.
Chicken
♥ Yakitori (450 php/per 3 pieces) |
The Yakitori can be salted or with teriyaki sauce. We ordered both since we appreciate the subtlety of the lightly salted ones. And, we also enjoy the umami richness of the sweet and salty teriyaki. What made the deliciously seasoned or marinated slightly-charred grilled chicken more pleasurable to munch on was its moisture and tenderness.
Donburimono
Tsukiji Donburi (850 php) |
For donburi or rice topping bowls, the Tsukiji Donburi with grilled eel and egg is a great option.
There's also a fresh seasonal fish cart going around for diners to check out for themselves. You can suggest how you want it served, sashimi, sushi or cooked. Shared on instagram what we ordered which was cooked for us. However, we forgot the name of the fish!
Tsinoy Foodies Verdict
Tsinoy Foodies considers Tsukiji Restaurant as a hiddem gem that has stood the test of time. In today's marketing-centric world, it is trully remarkable how Tsukiji Restaurant gracefully held on to its humble roots by consistently serving authentic and top-quality traditional Japanese dishes.

Tendon Akimitsu has arrived in the Philippines for quite some time. Finally, it opens its first solo shop in Glorietta 1 Top of the Glo.
I was really surprised to find that Glorietta 1 recently opened a roof deck area called Top of the Glo. Although I have only explored its Japan Town, I hope to come back and check out more.
Tendon Akimitsu boasts of its awards as displayed by its counter. Seeing these made me want to try it out with excitement.
Maki
♥ Aburi Salmon (350 php) |
Although specializing in tempura, I highly recommend wleting your appetite with the Aburi Salmon as a starter. Just looking at this makes me fantasize of having this again.
Tendon Set
♥ Nami Tendon Set (410 php) |
If you want to try a wonderful seafood tempura mix, order the Nami Tendon Set which is composed of Ebi Tempura (tiger prawns), scallops, whitebait fish, shrimps, okra and sweet potato.
♥ Nami Tendon |
Although Tendon Akimitsu is one of the new Tendon restaurants in Asakusa being established only in 2015, I trully believe that it deserves to be awarded for its Tempura. It is indeed one of the best I've had. The meal is very filling and worth the price. Though, I felt the need to ask for more tempura sauce which the servers happily adhered to.
Donburi Set
Beef Don (350 php) |
Pork Don (320 php) |
The Pork Don was also tough and dry.
Tsinoy Foodies Verdict
Tendon Akimitsu proves worthy of having garnered mulitple awards for its Tendon. So glad that it has more branches, I will head on over when craving for Tempura. As for the donburi, I hope to give it another try next time as it did not meet my expectations.

I've long been wanting to try Your Local. Finally, there was vacancy one weekend so we took the opportunity to dine.
With its dim lighting, you can barely see what's going on inside.
Upon stepping in, you'd understand why. The place is dark with low lighting and the wood furnitures furthers the dark appeal.
But, it's candle lighting gives a serene feel to it.
Food
Mains
My siblings who have tried Your Local insisted that first timers try the Torched Salmon Donburi so we ordered three of the same thing. According to my siblings, the serving size is now smaller and the price is higher. But, I think the serving size is just right as we had difficulty finishing our orders.
Ahia said he tried the Lamb Rendang before and it was also bigger. Again, I think the size is just enough for me. The flavor is strong that it gives me an impression that is heavier than it actually is.
I don't think I'll order one of this just for myself next time. I think this is more suitable to be shared although Your Local serving portion is for one individual meal of viand and staple.
Tsinoy Foodies Verdict
Your Local may not be as hot as it was but its still worth going back for despite the price increase. I will definitely go back when I crave for their one-of-a-kind Torched Salmon Donburi.

Osaka Ohsho: Revisit for Sukiyaki, Donburi, Gyoza and More! (SM Megamall)
Mandaluyong, Metro Manila, Philippines
Whenever we are at SM Megamall and craving for affordable Japanese food, Osaka Ohsho is the first thing that comes to mind.
Koshihikari Set
I highly recommend Osaka Ohsho's super sulit set meals! It's really more than enough for one BIG eater. Everyone says I'm a BIG eater and I'm honestly claiming it! As a BIG eater, I have to admit that this is more than enough for me. Aside from the hefty serving portion, almost all their sets comes with gyoza and fresh fruits.
As you can see the Beef Sukiyaki is pretty much loaded. Aside from this, they also have new sukiyaki items: Asari Gyoza Sukiyaki Soup for seafood lovers and the Gyoza Chicken Sukiyaki Soup if you need to re-energize.
Curry Set
If you have an inkling for Japanese curry, they have the delicious Chicken Karaage Curry Set.
Chahan Set
The Chicken Karaage and Gyoza Set is another great option.
Donburi Festival
We really appreciate having new dishes to try. This time, they have the new donburi items. We tried the Shake Don which is superb! We're very happy big the huge cuts and the perfect execution in how it was cooked. If you're not a salmon fan, they also have the Ebi Tempura Don, Doteyaki Don and Gyoza Donburi.
Tsinoy Foodies Verdict
Surely, there are a lot of Japanese cuisine options at SM Megamall. But, if you consider price, serving portion and variety, I think Osaka Ohsho is one of the wisest choice there especially since this is even a franchise from Japan. Don't you agree?
