Shokuji: Traditional Japanese Cuisine in Makati

Shokuji is one hidden gem in Makati for traditional Japanese Cuisine.  Located in the middle of buildings along San Augustin Street in Makati and its rustic facade, it is easy to miss.  But, I hope you do stop over and try it out because it is rare to find delectible traditional Japanese dishes that Shokuji has been serving for more than 16 years.

shokuji
Shokuji has a simple interior with white linen covered long tables and wooden cushioned chairs.  The floors are simple white-tiled that you'd commonly find in a house.  The place is enclosed in its plain white walls with a few light lamps except for the glass windows that allows diners to see their parking lot.

Food
complimentary soup
Complimentary Soup
They served a Complimentary Soup with generous portions of chicken chunks and flavorful chicken broth that I find simply soothing.

Appetizer & Sides
spicy tuna salad
Spicy Tuna Salad - Sharing (175 php)
The Spicy Tuna Salad reminds me of the spicy tuna sashimi with roe, spring onions and green lettuce.

Sashimi-Sushi Party Sampler
classic maki sampler
Classic Maki Sampler (375 php)
The Classic Maki Sampler is an affordable treat for the group since its comes with four pieces of Maguro (Tuna Sushi), four pieces of Kani Salad Makifour pieces of Ebi Tempura Maki and four pieces of California Maki.  The maki was freshly made as each bite made a crackle sound from the crispiness of the seaweed wrapper.  Everything in the assortment was also a delightful appetizer.

Yakimono
yakitori
  Yakitori (175 php)
The Yakitori is unlike any others I've tried.  It was more savory and fragrant than sweet.  It was so tender and succulent too.  An order is served with Japanese salad as side dish.

Tempura
ika tempura
Ika Temmpura (185 php)
If you want to sway from the usual Ebi Tempura, the Ika Tempura (prime squid tempura) is a good option.  The batter coating allows a perfect crunchiness contrasted by the smooth and mildly chewy squid fillet.

Teppan Yaki
shokuji tofu steak
 Shokuji Tofu Steak (260 php)
The Shokuji Tofu Steak is one of the best I've ever tried.  The balance of flavors was superb especially with the slight zing to tickle the taste bud.  The tofu is one of the finest quality too as it was soft and smooth.

shitake beef rolls
Shitake Beef Rolls (350 php)
The Shitake Beef Rolls is masculine thin beef strips rolled in juicy shitake mushrooms topped with spring onions and served with onion rings on the side.

Desserts
coffee jelly
Coffee Jelly (95 php)
The bitter sweet Coffee Jelly with a scoop of vanilla ice cream and cherry on top is the perfect meal ender.

Beverages
green mango shake
Green Mango Shake (95 php)
The Green Mango Shake is really tangy as it is only lightly sweetened.   I find it strong on the puree side rather than milkiness.

Tsinoy Foodies Verdict
Shokuji serves traditional Japanese cuisine like no other.  Although I usually find quality Japanese fare a bit pricey, Shokuji's pricing is really affordable.  They offer individual meals that are suitable for students and employees and also set meals and platters  that are great for group gatherings and occasions.  I would definitely want to come back and try more of their dishes when I have the chance.
