I have never been mystified by a food establishment until I encountered BOA Kitchen + Socials. Like an abstract art, there are so many aspects of it that requires to be deciphered.
The name BOA was conceptualized from the boa in the book by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry called "The Little Prince". Ironically, my mom who is not a book reader at all, loves that book so it was one of first books that I have read.
Although there are many philosophical interpretations to the boa in book "The Little Prince", what BOA Kitchen + Socials wants to depict is written on the wall (in what seems to be reptillean scales) "always change".
Food
For breakfast and lunch, it serves Australian-inlfuenced dishs. Then, at night, it transforms (symbolized by the revealing a hidden wall with an enchanting lady and a boa) into a social place with drinks and Asian-inspired dishes.
Lunch
♥ Tinapa Cream Cheese Toast (175 php) |
Sandwiches & Waffles
Chori Burger (295 php) |
Mains
♥ Steak and Eggs w/ Fries (495 php) |
English Breakfast (325 php) |
Pasta
♥ Alfredo Pesto Pasta (285 php) |
♥ Pasta Vongole (285 php) |
The Pasta Vongole is another well-executed dish. All quality ingredients (al-dente spaghetti, baby clams, garlic and lemon) are balanced in a way they are evident in every mouthful.
Dessert
Banana Pie (175 php) |
This is my first time to encounter a Banana Pie like this one. At first sight, I even mistook the caramelized banana for apple bits. At first bite, I was able to distinguish the wonderful texture the banana bits had to offer. The crumbs and vanilla ice cream tones down the sweetness of the caramel to a soothing level.
Small Plates
Sisig Croquettes (225 php) |
Wonton Nachos (245 php) |
♥ Salmon Tatar (345 php) |
♥ Pulpo (Grilled Octopus) (345 php) |
Hands down my most favorite dish in BOA is the Pulpo. This Spanish tapa dish had a very tender and deliciously smokey octopus. Together with the potato puree, chorizo crumbs, paprika-thyme oil, it was overall a savory and comforting dish.
Noodles
Char Kwaey Teow (365 php) |
Pad Thai Chicken (375 php) |
Mains
♥ Beef Rendang w/ Cococnut Lime Rice (425 php) |
♥ Thai Fried Chicken |
Funny how I have tried several Thai restaurants and yet this is my first time to try a Thai Fried Chicken. Because I enjoy tumeric and curry flavors, I trully enjoyed this together with the sweet chili sauce and curried mashed potato.
♥ Crispy Pork Sambal (445 php) |
I've never appreciated pork sambal until I tried BOA's Crispy Pork Sambal. The pork belly cooked like cripsy lechon kawali is good on its own. It is even better when it comes with the sambal sauce and slaw.
Dessert
Deconstructed Star Anise Cheesecake |
Drinks
Bar + Shots
I'm not much as a drinker as I am a foodie but BOA's drink are as equally interesting.
Aside from the usual blends, there's some color changing element too.
Tsinoy Foodies Verdict
BOA Kitchen + Socials is a chillout place that will definitely leave you a lasting impression. I really had a great time and would definitely love to come back. I hope Quezon City warmly welcomes concepts like this as it progressively evolves.

We're very fortunate to have a healthy food scene in the Philippines. Even cafes like Little Owl Cafe update their menu from time to time.
I've previously shared about this place so I'll skip the intro and get on with the food. The service was better and the food was served with not much idle time to spare.
All Star Breakfast
Don't you agree that the Omelette Chorizo Rice takes the semblance of the Japanese Omurice dish? Taste-wise, it is very different. The glaced sauce and savory chorizo is specially chosen to appeal to the Filipino tastebuds.
Starter
I must say that this is not the first time that I've encountered a fusion dish like this. What I like about Little Owl's Sisig Tacos is the harmonious ingredients. However, I felt that the shell isn't at par with my standards for soft shell tacos.
It's amazing to see everyone addictively popping vegetables into their mouths because of the Glazed Cauliflower. The flavor and texture is perfect that even the pickiest kids will eat this for sure!
Pastas
When presented with a glorious pasta dish like the Truffle Mushroom, how can I not oblige myself?
I loved this to bits!
Forget about the cholesterol because the Shrimp & Aligue will completely woo your taste buds.
Mains
With some staple, the tender and supremely succulent Beef Rendang is an excellent choice when you're craving for a Malaysian spiced dish.
If you're looking for a unique and unforgettable new dish to try, then go for the Kimchi Salmon Sinigang. This is a really ingenuous!
I am very much impressed with the menu update! A perfect execution for Little Owl Cafe! My primary visit here would always be for the Toby's Estate Coffee. Now, I would certainly order good food to go with it.

Lechon Kawali Bibimbap (320 php) |
I've always been a fan of the Korean bibimbap dish. Yet, I never imagined that the Lechon Kawali Bibimbap would work so wonderfully.
Chicken Satay (350 php) |
If I would choose between the rice bowls, it would be the Chicken Satay. I found the skewers to be fun to eat and the flavor goes well with the fried rice.
Sandwich
Chicken & Waffle (270 php) |
When I first tried the Chicken & Waffle, I felt that waffle was not complementing the fried chicken. But, they must have revised the recipe because it was perfect!
Beef Tapa & Cheese (295 php) |
I love cheese steak sandwiches but there aren't much remarkable ones to take note of here in Manila. Now, let me add the Beef Tapa & Cheese on the list!

Despite our busy schedules, my friends from The Foodies Circle just couldn't let 2012 past without a Christmas celebration together. This is definitely a food trip to remember since its my first time in Kapitolyo. I couldn't have wished for a better company than Sumi and Berylle who share the same love for Thai Cuisine as I do. So naturally, our first stop is Nav Modern Thai Cuisine.
Nav Modern Thai Cuisine may be humble in terms of floor area but the place is cozy and clean with a contemporary minimalist ambiance.
Food
It took as quite some time to decide the food because we literally wanted to try most of the menu offerings. But since this was only our first of many, the group settled with the best-sellers suggested by our server.
Nav's Starters
It may come as a surprise to you but all of us are quite health-conscious so we decided to start with a light and healthy appetizer with the Vegetable, Herb & Rice Paper. This was actually my first time to encounter this with two sauce options. The crunchy vegetables, fragrant cilantro, bouncy noodles which you can dip in the tasty peanut sauce and tangy lime dressing was an enjoyable starter.
Rice
One of the dishes that the gang easily agreed on was the Khao Kluk Kapi. We all love Thai Bagoong rice! This version does not disappoint. You can taste the bold presence of the bagoong with the rice and it is served with chopped green onions, shredded green mangoes and cucumbers and a fried egg on top. But, the group just can't help but yearn for some meat which we customarily expect from this type of dish.
Nav's Main Course
I was looking forward to a fish cooked similar to the crispy catfish so when the Crispy Fresh Water Tilapia, Tamarind and Shallots, I was surprised that it was cooked in a battered fish fillet style. I guess this displays the modern Thai twist of Nav because prior to this, I have not encountered a battered fish fillet in a Thai restaurant. It had a sour with a hint of sweet tamarind sauce which was supposedly enough to embellish the Tilapia fillets if only they didn't have a batter too thick to make the fish meat almost undetectable.
Another must-order for the group is the Nav's Pad Thai. This is practically the first item in the menu that got our attention. We're glad we did too because this has got to be one of the best I've tried. It has generous amounts of shrimp, chicken, egg, bean sprouts and coriander. The sweet and zesty sauce which perfectly coated every bouncy and chewy rice noodle was sensational especially with a tinge of lemon juice.
The Wok Chicken, Bamboo Shoots & Yard Beans is also a must try! The chicken bits were tender while the crunchy maboo shoots and yard beans created a great mishmash of textures. The sauce which had an essence of chicken and slight sweetness made this dish a success.
Off the Wok
I'm a late bloomer when it comes to appreciating curry including dishes like this beef rendang. But so far, the Beef Belly with Rendang Curry is one of the best I've tried. I can't help but fall in love with the soft beef belly together with the creamy, savory and slightly spicy rendang curry sauce topped with potato and carrot slices. In fact, I volunteered to swipe this clean with delight.
Update (October 18, 2014): Revisited and tried the ♥ Stuffed Squid (395 php), adding it to my recommendations. =)

If you're willing to leap beyond the Traditional Thai dishes, Nav Modern Thai Cuisine is the place to go to. The price is at the right range and the proportions are good for sharing so bring some company. I'm glad we came to the right place to celebrate our Christmas dinner.
