Relik Tapas Bar: Food as Good as its Parties

Ever since I tried Relik during its opening days, I've been trying to convince my family to visit it too.  Last month, we finally got to try it out.

relik tapas bar
Relik is located at the second level of Commerce Center Building.  It's actually on top of Kuppa Roastery Cafe.  There is a wide parking area and indoors too so it's convenient even when it's raining.

relik tapas bar
It has bricked walls hanged with all discs, photos, articles and other vintage items.  It has a LCD TV and DJ booth which is necessary when it turns into a live party place during the late hours.  Despite its mix and matched fixtures, the whole place surprisingly brings a warm and nostalgic feel.

Food

Let's Start with Tapas
potato bomba
Potato Bomba (160 php)
The Potato Bomba is Relik's version of a ham and cheese croquette with aoili.  It had a golden coating which was perfectly crunchy filled with smooth finely mashed potato that bore a hint of ham and cheese.

reliks beef tenderloin salpicao
Relik's Beef Tenderloin Salpicao (320 php)
Relik's Beef Tenderloin Salpicao is exactly as how I remembered it.  It was so tender and succulent.        It's so good you'd wish there was more.

quesadillas bbq chicken
Quesadillas BBQ Chicken (or what's left of it sorry I was too slow) (300 php)
The Quesadillas BBQ Chicken was served warm with oozing cheese so everybody was excited to eat it.  I even forgot to take a picture and only realized when only my share was left. =p

The Greenhouse
pomelo citrus green salad
Pomelo and Citrus Green Salad (In our case substituted with Strawberry) (210 php)
Since there were no pomelo, they offered to substitute it with strawberries which we didn't mind.  We've had salads with strawberry while in Baguio, so why not?  We're glad we did.  It was delicious.  The sweet fragrant strawberries together with the mandarin orange slices were a great match with the sesame vinaigrette.  We enjoyed this salad very much.

Let's Get Serious
mother anns braised ox tail
Mother Ann's Braised Ox Tail (450 php)
The Mother Ann's Braised Ox Tail is soft and bold with flavors.  It is probably one of the best one I've tried!

reliks mixed paella
 Relik's Mixed Paella (820 php)
The Relik's Mixed Paella needs to be ordered a day in advance.  Just a bite from this sent me a blissful spike of happiness with its rich tomato sauce covered paella and generous toppings.  It didn't have any socarrat at the bottom as we were able to sweep this pan clean easily.  Although it was advise for 8-10 persons, we felt wanting for more even though there were only six of us.

Tsinoy Foodies Verdict
Relik serves food as good as its parties.  I may not be a party person but I'm glad my mouth is wild and happy with their food.  Price is a bit on the high side I guess that's what you should be expecting when dining in a Tapas Bar.  Both Spanish and Boos indicate shelling out but without regret since they are both irresistible right?

Thai Resa: Thai Cuisine for Everyone (Quezon City)

When looking for an Authentic Thai Cuisine, many would assume that it would be a costly encounter.  But, Thai Resa would beg to differ.  According to the owner spouses Willie and Theresa Yu, nothing brings them greater joy than to see people from all walks of life satisfied with their food offering.

thai resa

thai resa authentic thai cuisine
Thai Resa has a purple and pink theme.  It has a set up of wooden tables and benches similar to a street-style eatery.  Although the place may lack grandeur, it did not lack guaranteed a sense of comfort and openness as the it was brightly lit and well-ventilated.  It was very clean and cool even though it was not air-conditioned.

thai resa
It had a wall plastered with post it notes filled with greetings, praise and comments from its happy customers.  We also left one.  Check it out on your next visit to know what we wrote. =p

Food

Ala Carte

Catfish with Green Mango Salad (180 php)
The Catfish with Green Mango Salad is a purple plateful of the famous Thai catfish steamed, shredded and then fried into crisp laid on a bed of thin mango slices.  Who could ever resist this?  Even fellow Tsinoy Foodie Kurt who doesn't dislikes fish, enjoyed every bit of this savory dish.

Crispy Tilapia with Thai-Resa Sauce and Green Mango Salad Whole (200 php)
The Crispy Tilapia with Thai-Resa Sauce and Green Mango Salad is my personal favorite among all the selections we tried.  Seriously, I never thought that tilapia could be this good.  The little tilapia cubes were perfectly crunchy on the outside and tender in between.  With the Special Thai-Resa sauce on it, it is good with or without the think green mango slices.

Beef Green Curry (180 php)
The Beef Green Curry is one of the mildest curry dishes I've tried perhaps to appreciate the other ingredients aside from the curry flavor.  The eggplant was sweet and blends well with the tender beef bits.

Tom Yum Goong (130 php)
The  Tom Yum Goong is a clear Thai soup with coconut milk, galangal, lemon grass, cilantro, tomatoes, onions and generous servings of large prawns.  This is dominantly sour with a hint of the mixed spices.  It somehow felt lacking in flavor or perhaps its because I miss the spiciness that could bring balance to it.

Amazing Fried Rice

Bagoong Fried Rice (150 php)
When the Bagoong Fried Rice arrived, we were all surprised at how jumbo-sized their cup of rice is.  The Bagoong Fried Rice came with slices green mangoes, scrambled egg and sweet chicken.  The bagoong was a sweeter than usual which suggests that it was adjusted to the Filipino preference.  I also felt that the toppings were not equally proportioned with the bagoong rice.  Nevertheless, this is a fried rice with its own twist is pretty good.

Crabmeat Fried Rice (180 php)
We were not aware at how generous their serving size is so we ordered two kinds of fried rice.   The Crabmeat Fried Rice came in a huge mountainous form.  This could serve around 3-4 people.  It had tiny toasted bits of crabmeat embodying a natural sweet taste.  This is a good accompaniment to any viand.

Noodles

Pad Thai (150 php)
Among our orders the Pad Thai fell a bit below my expectations since I didn't find it saucy enough which led to the lack of taste.  However, fret not since you according to the owners/chefs, you can always request the food to be tweaked into your preference.  But, I did enjoy the balance of textures between the soft scrambled egg, crunchy beans sprouts and smooth and chewy noodles.

Refreshments

Thai Iced Tea (60 php)
Their Thai Iced Tea is naturally brewed with milk and sugar.  I think I'll order this each time I visit Thai Resa.

Tsinoy Foodies Verdict

Its great that Thai Resa now offers Thai Cuisine for everyone.  If you're craving for Thai food, you can visit and be satisfied without hurting your budget.  It is also a good introduction to those who have not delved into Thai cuisine.  I'd suggest you come in groups since their normal serving size is already good for sharing.  Whenever we dine, many would remark that we at The Foodies Circle had a healthy appetite but this is one of the rare occasions where we failed to wipe the platters clean.

Blue Toque: Ultimate Cakes and Sweet Treats

Blue Toque is a new line of sweet creations by Mary Anne Ramos who graduated from Ateneo and then pursued her passion in baking in ISCAHM.  Thus, the name of the brand represents her two alma mater.

Last month, my friend Berylle brought us some of Blue Toques products for us to try.  Then, we during our visit at Rockwell's 2nd Ultimate Taste Test.  There it was again but with more innovations.  Let me share a few we've tried...

the ultimate
The Ultimate (150 php/slice, 625 php/6", 1195 php /9")
the ultimate
The Ultimate (150 php/slice, 625 php/6", 1195 php /9")
The Ultimate is a multi-layer chocolate mousse cake which has won in the Foodgasm Taste Test 2012 and Ultimate Taste Test 8.0.  It had a rich chocolate ganache top, rich velvety mousse followed by an even richer chocolate ganache layer and then nutty crunchy crust.  This cake melts in your mouth with overwhelming smoothness in every bite.  But, I found this too sweet to eat in just one sitting.

This is also available in The Parvati Store.

nutella mousse cake
 Nutella Mousse Cake (575 php/6", 875 php/8")
We goit to try the Nutella Mousse Cake in sampler size at the Rockwell's 2nd Ultimate Taste Test.  It has the same melts in your mouth sensation like The Ultimate but it delivers a unique twist with the Nutella.  The exquisite taste with just the right amount of sweetness won me over.

belgian chocolate chip cookie
Belgian Chocolate Chip Cookie (195 php /6's, 310 php/10's,  300 php/bitesized)
The Belgian Chocolate Chip Cookie is a soft and chewy with large chunks of rich Belgian chocolate.  I love the perfect texture of their cookies because they aren't purely soft, the crust has a slight crisp to too.  It has a manageable extent of sweetness which is attributed to the chunk of rich chocolate.

nutella cookies cream cheese brownies
Nutella Cookies (195 php/6's,310 php/10's,300 php/bitesized)
and  Always Sold-Out Cream Cheese Brownies (225 php/6's,285 php/8's)
The Nutella Cookies are soft and chewy nutella cookies with chocolate chip.  This had a sweeter blend compared to the Belgian Chocolate Chip Cookie.

The Always Sold-Out Cream Cheese Brownies is the best Blue Toque product I have tried yet.  It has a delicious sophisticated taste due to the medley of cream cheese and chocolate.  It has the perfect texture.  It was moist, fudgy and creamy.

Tsinoy Foodies Verdict

Blue Toque should keep it up by making more delightful sweet treats that will surely entice dessert lovers like us.  It's great that they offer a wide variety so people can have their own favorites according to their preference.

Chubby's Rib Shack: Ribs and Chops in Makati

Chubby's Rib Shack is a meat lovers paradise.  It is located in Solaris One Building near Makati Medical Center and hundreds of business offices.

chubbys rib shack
It has an ambiance of a shack but a warm and cozy one.  It had red booth liked that of a diner and wooden fixtures that complements its wooden planks and ceiling.  It also had wood fire displayed by the side.  It has an open kitchen visible through its tile glasses too.  Since you're expected to be messy. They have placed napkins on each table along with their menu.

Food
I'm not much of a meat lover so I let fellow Tsinoy Foodie Kurt take charge of the food selection.  Although we could have ordered some options from their sister company Buffalo's Wings and Things, as expected Kurt decided to go otherwise because he adores meat!

Chubby's Originals
riblets basket
 Riblets Basket (279 php)
As our server recommends, we ordered Riblets Basket.  It is smoked and grilled riblets basted with cayenne bbq sauce serve in a red basket with texas toast and a cup of coleslaw.  We both loved this!  This is one of the best riblets we've had.  We only wish it had a more generous proportions.   The coleslaw is just okay.

Chop House Classics
whiskey glaze and frizzled onions
Whiskey Glaze and Frizzled Onions (249 php)
The Whiskey Glaze and Frizzled Onions  is premium Angus beef steak seasoned with whiskey glaze served with frizzled onions, texas toast, steamed veggies and honkey tonk rice.  The Whickey glaze gave a light sweet and aromatic flavor that complements the steak well.  You have to eat this fast to appreciate it thought because it isn't served in a hot plate.  It's our first time to try the honkey tonkey rice and it was great with the steak.

Tsinoy Foodies Verdict
Chubby's Rib Shack has great meaty options and you can also order old time favorites from Buffalo's Wings and Things.  Their Riblets Basket are a must try!  Their steak meals are so affordable too.  We'll probably try their other variants when in the area.

The Cake Club by Diamond Hotel: Weekend Brunch and More!

If its one thing that's sure to charm us ladies at The Foodies Circle, it would be sweets.  So, when we had a chance to dine with fellow foodies at The Cake Club at Bonifacio High Street Central, we were ecstatic!

the cake club
The Cake Club has a shiny gold plated lettering depicting it to be an elegant place to be.  It had a glass door and window display that allows you to view their cakes and boutique.

the cake club
The Cake Club is not just a restaurant, it also sells Hediard Tea, Malongo Coffee, Royce Chocolates including my favorite Royce Nama Chocolate and Royce Potato Chocolate Chip, imported wines and their Ice Cream (350 php/pint and 1,000 php/gallon).

the cake club
The area can only serve a limited number of customers but it was very posh and cozy with its well-plush chairs and booths.  We were there early for breakfast so we got the place all by ourselves.  But, by lunch time, we noticed that the tables were all occupied.

Food

Weekend Brunch Selection
The reason why we were all eager to visit during the morning is because The Cake Club has a new offering which is the Weekend Brunch that is available from 8am to 3pm.  We, Tsinoy Foodies, sometimes go for a morning run around the area so we know how limited the choices are when it comes to breakfast and we thought this idea is brilliant.

pan fried foie gras
Pan Fried Foie Gras (365 php)
I don't think I've ever had Foie Gras for breakfast before.  So, the Pan Fried Foie Gras served with creamy scrambled eggs, toasts and salad in truffle oil.

smoked salmon benedict
Smoked Salmon Benedict (345 php)
The Smoked Salmon Benedict laid beautifully on the whole wheat quinoa pancake and covered in hollandaise sauce.  I love the cooked asparagus because it was boiled with a hint of truffle oil.  It also had a salad on the side which makes this a wholesome breakfast.  The smoke salmon and the eggs yolks were wonderfully runny within just the way I'd want to enjoy them.

meditteranean eggs
♥ Meditteranean Eggs (355 php)
The Meditteranean Eggs is the best brunch offering for me.  The Meditteranean Eggs was accompanied by three pan fried lamb sausage and rockets salad with feta cheese and basil.  I've never had Meditteranean Eggs but now I look forward try more of this.  But, it was the pan fried lamb sausages that made this dish my favorite.  The lamb sausages was not only tender and succulent, it also had a bold meaty and clean taste.

homemade corned beef stuffed blinis
Homemade Corned Beef Stuffed Blinis (325 php)
The Homemade Corned Beef Stuffed Blinis  is their homemade corned beef with caramelize onions and Swiss cheese wrapped in egg topped with whole-grain mustard sauce.  Their corned beef was not only free from preservatives but its also not too salty like the canned ones so its healthier.

whole wheat buttermilk pancakes
Whole Wheat Buttermilk Pancakes (295 php)
At home, we only buy whole wheat pastries for our daily consumption but I have to admit, we've never tried whole wheat pancakes before.  The main reason is that its not usually available at the groceries.  I've glad The Cake Club serves one.  The Whole Wheat Buttermilk Pancakes had some mascarpone cream, homemade blueberry preserve sauce, fresh banana slices and walnuts on it.  The blueberry preserve sauce was sweet enough that you don't need to it with maple syrup.  The texture is fluffy but heavier than the usual pancakes probably because it is made of whole wheat.

stuffed french toast
Stuffed French Toast (295 php)
The Stuffed French Toast had a very appealing plating.  I never thought french toast could look so alluring.  They made use of a Brioche bread and filled it with cream cheese topped it with powdered sugar, fresh strawberries and blueberries and served it with a wild berry mascarpone sauce.

bircher muesli
Bircher Muesli (265 php)
The Bircher Muesli  is old-fashioned rolled oats, assorted dry fruits including raisins, fresh green apple and shredded coconut soaked in yogurt and milk.  Although this may seem a bit ordinary compared to the rest, if your craving to have it for breakfast, then be glad that The Cake Club serves an excellent one.  I for one eat muesli on a scheduled routine of twice a week.

Starters
truffle fries
Truffle Fries (180 php)
The Truffle Fries is an addictive starter item.  I didn't realized I finished.  The truffle oil is just right and it had a balanced with the sea salt flakes.

foie gras macaron
Foie Gras Macaron (150 php)
The Cake Club takes pride in their Foie Gras Macaron which is a unique offering which you can't find anywhere.  Aside from the fact that it is the most luxurious macaron I've tried, its also the most savory.

Mains
lamb burger
Lamb Burger (490 php)
The Lamb Burger surprised me a bit because it had an strong morrocan spiced lamb patty which I've never encountered before.  The other ingredients such as the harissa yogurt, feta and paremesan cheese and buns were perfect complements that enhanced the experience.  It is also served with salted french fries on the side.

braised veel cheek ravioli
Braised Veel Cheek Ravioli (370 php)
I've tried veel cheeks before but never in ravioli form so I was eager to try this.  I liked it but it was difficult to finish because of the strong taste.

baked salmon
Baked Salmon (455 php)
The Baked Salmon had a meditterenean crust that was flavorful so its best eaten with the risotto.

slow roasted beef belly
♥ Slow-Roasted Beef Belly (395 php)
The  Slow-Roasted Beef Belly is so soft, it almost melts in your mouth and exploding with flavor.  This is one fine meaty dish to order.  This is my recommendation among the Mains.

Pastry Selection
Of course, we would never ever leave The Cake Club without tasting their cakes!

vanessa
♥ Vanessa (250 php)
Vanessa is a pistachio macaroon filled with fresh strawberries and cream.  It was delightful and refreshing.  It had an initial taste of pistachio followed by an pleasurable berry taste.

guia
♥ Guia (250 php)
Guia is an excellent choice if you want an out of the ordinary cheesecake.  It has a rich and bold taste of maple and walnuts and a rich and creamy consistency.  I loved it!

Ice Cream Selection (2 scoops/150 php)
I may love cakes, but my first love will always be ice cream.  I'll never pass up on these. I've tried some of their ice creams before during my visit to Corniche at Diamond Hotel but since its a buffet, the flavors are out at random.  This time, I got to try new flavors which I've missed before.

diamond hotel ice cream
Apple Pie, Black Sesame, Baked Cheesecake and Genmaicha (2 Sccops for 150 php)
Apple Pie

  • The Apple Pie is too sweet for my taste.  It felt thick and a bit like syrup in every spoonful.

♥ Black Sesame

  • The Black Sesame is nice and rich.  It was not too sweet and had a nice blend of sesame taste in it.

♥ Baked Cheesecake

  • I loved the Baked Cheesecake.  It really had a texture like a cheesecake only it was creamier and melts in your mouth.

♥ Genmaicha

  • Genmaicha is green tea with brown rice.  Te aromatic flavor of the brown rice counters the sweetness well.   Its taste reminded me of the Milk Tea

Tsinoy Foodies Verdict
Now you can visit The Cake Club for a wonderful and healthy weekend brunch before awarding your safe with their delightful desserts.  They also have their regular dishes that you can try.
