Toro Restaurant and Bar: Mother's Day 4-Course Degustation: Mother's Day 4-Course Degustation

We would never be who we are today if not for our beloved mother.  From child birth until now, we are showered by their love and care.  In our own little ways, we try as much as we can to show them how much we thank them.  But, its only once a year that we could get an opportunity to celebrate "Mother's Day" with the rest of the world.  It is the only time that they get along with our silly ideas without giving them an excuse to deem it impractical.  So every year, my siblings and I would bring our mother to a fancy restaurant and shower her with presents.

Allow me to share with you Toro Restaurant and Bar's Mother's Day 4-Course Degustation that will surely delight your mother's warm and loving heart.  Toro Restaurant and Bar combines distinct Japanese flavors with the simplicity and vibrance of Mexican spices.  These dishes of innovation and creativity will surely excite your palate and give you a one of a kind experience.  It's chandeliers and Kyoto Zen decor highlighted by a giant mural of a latina Geisha will surely grant you a memorable and dazzling experience.

For the main dish, you can choose between the Pescado in Verde and Ribeye Teppanyaki.
pescado in verde
Pescado in Verde
The  Pescado in Verde is a pan-grilled kingfish which we locally know as tanigue in creamy sauce toppe with asparagus and potato shoe strings.  This dish is outstanding!  A bite is all it takes to be  wooed by the moist and soft kingfish and its simply alluring sauce.

ribeye teppanyaki
Ribeye Teppanyaki
The Ribeye Teppanyaki is a grilled tender and succulent beef cubes with buttered vegetables drenched in a fragrant and flavorful sauce.

It is very difficult to decide which main dish option to choose but during our meal, the Pescado in Verde definitely captured our hearts.

beringer white zinfadelsnickerdoodle
The roseate Beringer White Zinfadel Wine holds a pleasing characteristic similar to a mother: sweet and fruity.   The dessert shot of Snicker Doodle is similar to an Irish cream with real snickers chocolate bits.  It is a sweet and delightful way to end the a fulfilling meal.

Bugsy's Sports Bar & Bistro: Great Food Proportions

My cousin thought we should try out Bugsy's Sports Bar & Bistro so she invited us over with all our relatives for her birthday.  She told me that the place is a famous drinking place because their beverage prices are quite affordable.  But, the food is pretty good too.

bugsy's sports bar and bistro
We met at Bugsy's Sports Bar & Bistro Bonifacio Global City Branch.  Located in Burgos Circle just between Sweet Bella (see previous entry) and Yakitori (see previous entry).

bugsy's sports bar and bistro
Just upon entry, you can view the sports bar with high tables and chairs.  As expected from a sports bar, it had several LCD screens were you can watch sports shows.

bugsy's sports bar and bistro
The bistro part is located on the second floor where we dined.  It had a scarlet lounge which was very cozy.  There is a clear glass window that over looks over the first floor.  Unlike below, it only has one LCD TV screen.

Appetizers
calamari
Calamari (185 php)
The Calamari were huge.  They had a nice thin crunchy coating and the squid were soft and easy to chew.  It goes well with their marinara sauce.

mozzarella sticks
Mozzarella Sticks (195 php)
I've always loved Mozzarella Sticks.  Bugsy's version were jumbo sized.  It was oozing with mozzarella.  It was so deliciously cheesy!  It has the same marinara sauce as the Calamari.

bugsy's cured beef surprise
♥ Bugsy's Cured Beef Surprise (195 php)
Bugsy's Cured Beef Surprise is beef strips cured in tender similar to what we locally know as "tapa".  It was very tasty even without dipping it into spicy vinegar.  My nephew loved this so much.  Both of us couldn't stop digging in to this.

Main Course
bugsy's siegel
♥ Bugsy's Siegel (595 php)
We were all surpised to see when the Bugsy's Siegel was served.  I was so excited to eat the big slab of USDA Certified Angus ribeye steak that I didn't bother about my shot and for that I apologize.  They were 1 inch thick and 400 grams in weight.  It was cooked medium well just as I had requested.  I could taste the masculinity of the Angus beef steak in every bite.  Yum!

pan seared salmon
Pan Seared Salmon (295 php)
The Pan Seared Salmon comes with carbonara and garlic bread.  Pan seared means it is cooked in a high temperature so that both sides will be crispy brown.  I felt that the salmon could have been cooked longer since some parts were not even brown yet.  In terms of the inside, it was pinkishly raw just as its supposed to be.

grilled pork chops
Grilled Pork Chops (195 php)
The Grilled Pork Chops were well marinated and tender.  It was pretty good.  It goes well with the rice and spicy soy vinegar sauce.

chicken corleone
Chicken Corleone (250 php)
The Chicken Corleone is a pan fried breaded chicken breast filled with three kinds of cheese: blue cheese, mozzarella and cheddar cheese.  It is served with mashed potatoes.  The chicken was very tender and tasty perhaps because it was locked in with all those cheese.

Dessert
bugsy's chocolate lava cake
Bugsy's Chocolate Lava Cake (145 php)
The Bugsy's Chocolate Lava Cake  is a bitter sweet chocolate lava cake topped with whip cream and drizzled with chocolate syrup.  The warm chocolate filling was a bit sweeter but just right when eaten with the rest.

Tsinoy Foodies Verdict
Bugsy's Sports Bar & Bistro is a great place to hang out with the cozy atmosphere.  The food is great for sharing too.  Given the area and the food quality, the price is very reasonable.  For sure sport lovers would enjoy watching, eating and drinking at Bugsy's.

Chuck's Grub: Fish & Chips

We've been hearing a lot of raves about Chuck's Grub Fish & Chips.  So when we stopped over at Rockwell Powerplant, we didn't let the chance pass.  It was located along the food stalls at the back part of Rustan's Supermarket

chuck's grub fish and chips
The area has no tables even for standing so it was a bit tricky to eat there especially with the sauce and all.

chucks grub fish and chips
Seeing it being featured in various food magazines and other forms of publication heightened our expectation.

Food
handy fish facts
We, Tsinoy Foodies, have to admit that we are not experts when it comes to fish.  So its a good thing there's a fish handy fact sheet that served as our guide when we were deciding on what to order.

fish and chips
Each order was served in a cone-shaped carton.  It contained a slice of lemon, 2 pieces of fish and some chips.  It also comes with one sauce of your choice.

beer-battered snapper and chips
Beer-Battered Snapper & Chips (200 php)
After squeezing the lemon.  Fellow Tsinoy Foodie Kurt munched on his Beer-Battered Snapper and dipped it the delicious Garlic Mayo Sauce. He found the firm fish meat and rich fishy flavor to his liking.  However, we were both disappointed with the second piece because it tasted strongly of mud.  We couldn't eat it in disgust. If you think about it... A piece of Beer-Battered Snapper almost costs 80 php so we literally threw that amount of food away.  =(

beer-battered cobbler and chips
 Beer-Battered Cobbler & Chips
I got the Beer-Battered Cobbler & Chips.  The beer-batter coating is very thin and crispy.  I'd say the consistency is very good.  In terms of flavor, it is pretty good.  But, not the best we've had.  It was really tender, succulent and mild tasting.  Because of its flaky texture, I barely needed to chew.  I chose the Good Old Vinegar as sauce which in my opinion is a wrong choice.  I should've opted for the Tartar Sauce.

Tsinoy Foodies Verdict
Chuck's Grub is worth a try!  It's great that they have a lot of fish selections.  I'm even considering coming back to try the Beer-Battered Halibut & Chips priced at 280 php.  But, our experience with Kurt's Beer-Battered Snapper & Chips is drawing us back.  We thought the disproportionality of the price and the serving size would at least be compensated by control but it failed us.  What do you think?

Domino's Pizza: Pizza and More! (Pasong Tamo Chino Roces Makati)

We've always been a fan of Domino's Pizza.  We have been planning to dine at the Domino's Pizza Pasong Tamo Branch since it opened.  But, it only materialized last month.

domino's pizza

dominos pizza

dominoes pizza
Domino's Pizza Chino Roces Branch had a clean ambiance with a visible kitchen from the counter so you could watch as your pizza is being prepared.

domino's pizza
Domino's Pizza also has a screen that updates you the status of your order.  Weird though.  We didn't see our order in the screen.  Is it because we ordered too many of a variety?

Food

Favorites
Of course, pizza is Domino's Pizza specialty and our order wouldn't be complete without one.
 extravaganzza
Extravaganzza 12"  Hand Tossed (599 php)
Extravaganzza has always been our default order at Domino's Pizza ever since.  The quality is as good as before.  I love their pizza dough so I prefer the hand tossed.  With the extravaganzza you can also fully appreciate the freshness of their ingredients.

potato pizza
Potato Pizza 12" Hand Tossed (549 php)
The Potato Pizza is topped with potato wedges, bacon, corn and onions, mushroom and mayonnaise.  Although I find it sinful and heavy, its worth the try.

margherita
Margherita 12" (499 php)
We had the Margherita in crispy thin crust.  The Margherita is topped with diced tomato, mozzarella pearl balls and fresh basil leaves.  I like this because of the fresh basil leaves.  Unfortunately, not all the parts have them.

Extra! Extra!
buffalo chicken wings
Buffalo Chicken Wings 6 pcs. (225 php)
My family used to loved the Wild Wings with the old Domino's Pizza so we ordered the Buffalo Chicken Wings.  It is no longer spicy like the Wild Wings so it no longer pleases us.

meaty bolognese spaghetti
Meaty Bolognese Spaghetti (99 php)
The Meaty Bolognese Spaghetti was nothing special.  It's not as cheesy as we hoped too.  We'll skip this next time.

On the Side
apple crumble
 Apple Crumble 7" (149 php)
The Apple Crumble is so good that we instantly regret not ordering a bigger size upon tasting.  It has three layers.  The first one is their signature cream cheese, followed by the apple streusles and then the crumble.  The flavor is perfect!  It was not too sweet yet very tasty.  The crispiness is also delightful!  This is one of the best version of apple crumble that I've tried.  This is a must try!

cheesy bread
  Cheesy Bread (60 php)
The Cheesy Bread is liked as thick as their pizza crust topped with cheese.

Tsinoy Foodies Verdict
Domino's Pizza is one of the most competitive in the pizza industry!  One can't go wrong in their pizza selections and their Apple Crumble.  Their pricing is affordable and it's best to dine in groups.  Although they have limited branches, they do deliver with a 30-minute guarantee so give it a try!

Drink Tea: Roselle Tea and More

After we ate at Shi Lin (see previous entry), my sister insisted that we go and try Drink Tea because she loved it. I later found out the Drink Tea is a Taiwan franchise.

drink tea
Drink Tea has a modern minimalist ambiance with cafe table set up.

Drinks
In customizing your drinks, you can choose the sugar level, ice level and additional (toppings).

Milk Tea
chamomile milk tea
Chamomile Milk Tea M (75 php)
The  Chamomile Milk Tea had a sweet and mild minty taste.  It was cool and refreshing.

green beans milk tea
Green Beans Milk Tea M (80 php)
The Green Beans Milk Tea is topped with green bean which we locally know as "monggo".  I find this a bit undermined compared to the rest because it has nothing special to offer.

Roselle
The Roselle selection is Drink Tea's unique offering that differentiates it from other brands.  Roselle is found to be high in Vitamin C and has many health benefits.
prune roselle tea
Prune Roselle Tea M (70 php)
The Prune Roselle Tea is a roselle tea with a single prune on top.  The prune is a great complement to the roselle tea which has a ambrosial sweet and sour taste.

roselle tomato
♥ Roselle Tomato M (85 php)
The Roselle Tomato is Drink Tea's best seller.  It is a must try!

Tsinoy Foodies Verdict
Drink Tea serves milk teas and more at an afffordable price.  The Roselle selection is a must try!  The staff is also friendly and helpful in advising what we should order.

Kitsho Restaurant and Sake Bar: Quality Japanese at Trader's Hotel Manila

Japanese cuisine is one of the most loved in the world.  Thus, whether it is with friends or family, I usually end up exploring more into the Japanese food culture.

Last week, I got to try Kitsho Restaurant and Sake Bar at Trader's Hotel Manila.  It has a beautiful artificial Cherry blossom tree that brings you happiness when you see it bloom during spring time in Japan.  I believe that is a perfect representation of "Kitsho" which means happiness.

Kitsho Restaurant and Sake Bar has a serene and harmonious ambiance with its traditional and contemporary Japanese zen interiors.  It has a cozy sake bar and elegant dining areas.  It is headed by Executive Chef Masahiro Mizumoto who trained in Fukuoka, Japan.  Aside from his 27 years of experience, he is also licensed to prepare the Fugu (pufferfish).  It is a licensed that requires at least five years of studying to acquire. (the length of studying period is almost similar to studying medicine huh?)  If you want to order it, please reserve it in advance because they have to ship it from Japan.

It has a sushi bar and an open kitchen where you can watch chefs delicately doing the food preparation with the freshest ingredients.

The set up is awfully familiar to me but I can't remember where.

Food

Sashimi, Sushi and Maki
Sashimi Moriawase (1100 php)
The Sashimi Moriawase is a platter of assorted sashimi: Sake (salmon), Maguro (tuna), Uni (Sea Urchin) and Ika (cuttle fish).  The salmon sashimi is one of the freshest I have ever tasted.  Each item served melts in your mouth.  I especially loved the salmon sashimi because it had a rich natural sweet taste.

Take Nigiri Sushi (850 php)
The Take Nigiri Sushi is a mix of a Sake Sushi (salmon), Hamachi Sushi (young yellow tail), Unagi Sushi (eel), Ebi Sushi (shrimp), Uni sushi, Ikura sushi (salmon roe),Kohada sushi (black spotted sardine) California Maki,  and six pieces of Spicy Tuna Maki.  Of course, the sushi are also at freshest state but I personally prefer eating them as sashimi so I could devour on their natural flavor more.

California Maki (180 php) and Spicy Tuna Maki (280 php)
Although California Maki and Spicy Tuna Maki were very delicious, they were overshadowed by the big sashimi and sushi platters.

Tempura
Uni Tempura (320 php)
If you want a new twist to the usual Tempura that you eat, I highly recommend you try the Uni Tempura.  The Uni Tempura is soft, creamy and briny uni sandwiched in nori (seaweed) wrappers and coated in light and crispy tempura batter.

Others
Kaibashira Butter Shoyuyaki Uni Sauce (480 php)
It was my first time to try the Kaibashira Butter Shoyuyaki Uni Sauce.  It was jumbo scallops covered in a uni sauce.  It was my favorite among all the dishes we tried.

Buta Kakuni (350 php)
The Buta Kakuni is Japanese braised pork belly topped with a small amount of karashi (Japanese mustard) and shiraga negi (Japanese Green Onions).  Growing up with a health-conscious upbringing, I am not a fan of this dish.  But, I enjoyed Chef Mizuto's Buta Kakuni because the pork was succulent and the karashi and shiraga negi was a perfect contrast from the oiliness.

Hotaru Ika (280 php)
The Hotaru Ika is trully Chef Mizumoto's masterpiece.  We were told that it took him six hours to prepare this dish.  It was delightful!  It was drowning in sauce and was topped with a form of jelly. Upon biting into the soft firefly squid, it gave a unique popping sensation.

Chawanmushi (280 php)
The Chawanmushi is steamed egg with seafood topped with Mitsuba (Japanese Parsley).  It is one of my favorite Japanese dishes.  Kitcho's Chawanmushi is the most flavorful and bountiful one I've tried.  It has a lot of seafood in it including a squid ball and an Unagi.

Salmon Tartaryaki (480 php)
The Salmon Tartaryaki is a fusion dish.  It is a salmon topped with a different style of tartar sauce.  It is pretty good!  Everyone loved this dish.

Before proceeding to the dessert, we had the Dobon Mushi.  It was my first time to try this classic Japanese soup.  It was served in a traditional Japanese tea pot with a slice of lemon on top of it.  We were instructed to squeeze the lemon and enjoy. It was a clear light dashi water enhanced by the chicken, fish, mushroom and shrimp contained therein.  I loved this!

Drinks
Four Season Shake

Desserts
Grilled Banana with Vanilla and Kuromitsu (150 php)
On all my previous entries, you would probably notice that I always order Green Tea Ice Cream whenever available.  But on this occasion, I gladly accepted the Grilled Banana with Vanilla and Kuromitsu that was already prepared for us.  The banana was grilled lightly and topped with Kuromitsu which we commonly know as caramelized sugar, vanilla ice cream and whip cream.  It was pretty good because the banana was light and refreshing.

Tsinoy Foodies Verdict
Kitsho Restaurant and Sake Bar offers the Quality Japanese dishes with the freshest and finest ingredients.  The price you pay is justified not just by the ingredients but also with the diligence they put in the food preparation.  They also have affordable bento boxes available.
