Malcolm's Burger: Malcolm's Classic Wagyu Burger

A few weeks ago, we read fellow foodie blogs raving about Malcolm's Burger and they also announced that there will be Buy 1 Take 1 on February 6, 2012 which marks its first anniversary.

We, Tsinoy Foodies, have never tried Malcolm's Burger before so we decided to try them out.  We were surprised at the long line when we arrived at around 6 pm.  I know the usual reaction is not to buy anymore right?  But, in our case, we assumed that the long line meant that the burgers Malcolm's sold must be worth the wait.  While Kurt was at the very end of the line, I went in and the management assured me that they still have enough burger.  I'm glad that Malcolm's Burger was prepared for their promo.

It took us around an hour and half in line before we finally got to glance upon Malcolm's Burger counter.  We ordered for ourselves and some take home for our families.

Malcolm's Classic Wagyu Burger(120 php)
Malcolm's Classic Wagyu Burger  (120 php)
Malcolm's Classic Wagyu Burger is simply Malcolm's wagyu burger patty with basic garnishes such as lettuce, tomatoes and onions tucked in between the buns.  The wagyu patty was juicy and tender.  The taste was also good.  It is one of the best wagyu Burger in the country sourcing its wagyu beef locally.   Based on our experience, its best to eat the burger once served to enjoy it warm, tender and juicy.

Tsinoy Foodies Verdict
Malcolm's Burger offers the most affordable wagyu burgers in the country.  The taste and texture is as competitive as its more pricey counterparts.

Upon our arrival at MacroAsia Catering Services headquarters inside the airport, we were given a guided tour to their operations facility to show us how they make the airline meals.  We were very impressed with their procedure.  It was strictly hygienic and systematic.  I never could have imagined that the food preparation could be so complex and sophisticated until this tour.

Riviera Cafe Dinner Buffet at The Heritage Hotel Manila

For my aunt's birthday, we were invited to eat a dinner buffet at Riviera Cafe in The Heritage Hotel Manila, a deluxe five star hotel.

As we entered, we all checked the buffet spread.  It was our first time to try the buffet at Riviera Cafe.  To be honest, I also tried to research Riviera Cafe but could not find any entries on them.  As I tried to take a photo, I found out why.  Like many other hotel buffets we've been to, they don't allow customers to take photos of their offerings because their competitors might see them.  For all the previous hotel buffets we've been to, I just let them all pass and no entry on them was ever written.  But, today, I'm in a mood to share.  (*Pardon for the photos which are only taken via Ipod Touch)

Cafe Riviera has different stations:  Asian Corner, Fresh Seafood Bar, Shabu-Shabu Station, Japanese Sushi Bar, Chinese StationPastry Section, Salad SectionCheese Station, Grilling StationSoup Station, Non-Halal Station, Fresh Fruit Station, Ice Cream Bar, and Dessert Station.

Riviera Cafe has a function room where we were accommodated.  It was elegant and cozy.

Service is really good.  We were served our drinks as soon as we were seated.  The staffs we're very friendly and accommodating.  They are keen in observing when our plates are empty and they are polite to ask for our permission before taking them.  My aunts were so happy with their service that they gave our waiters generous tips.

What I had
I started my dinner with some Salmon Sashimi from the Sushi Bar.  I passed over the Fresh Seafood and Chinese Station to get some appetizers.  They had the jellyfish, siomai and century egg.  I also tried several of their cheese offerings and cold cuts.  They also have a pizza.

They offered three kinds of soup.  I had the pumpkin soup while the others tried the Chinese soups.  I noticed that the soup were replenished once in awhile to ensure that they are hot.

I tried various prepared salads.  I especially enjoyed the one with the crab sticks.  They also had the make your own salad if you prefer those.

Main Course
I had some Hainanese Chicken.  I went over to the Grilling Station where I had lamb chops, beef, squid and chicken satay.  Soon enough, it was delivered to our table. This station failed to impress me, especially the lamb which had a gamey taste.  I couldn't eat it.  I tried to replace the bad impression by trying out the Chinese dishes.  They were all pretty good.

The best part of Riviera Cafe's buffet is the dessert.  They have a lot of cake selections.  Apart from those displayed, their an entire chiller of them.  Everything is a delicious as they look.  I wanted to try more of them but I was so stuffed.  All their cakes are delicious.  All of them had the right amount of sweetness.  I also got myself an ice cream with my choice of toppings at their self-service ice cream bar.

At the end of our meal, we had some brewed coffee.  It was a nice way to end a meal.

Tsinoy Foodies Verdict
Riviera Cafe's international buffet has a wide spread of offerings.  They have a little of everything.  It's also nice to know that their meats are all halal-certified.  I noticed that they served more Chinese dishes and they are all delicious!  Riviera Cafe's desserts station is competitive in terms of selection and taste.  The price is just right.  In the league of five star hotel buffet's, their price is one of the most affordable.  The service at Riviera Cafe is great too.  The dishes were replenished as soon as they ran out too.

Banapple Banoffie Pie: My Second Birthday Cake

Because the first planned cake (see previous entry) was not enough for us, we decided to go Banapple at Ayala Triangle to purchase my second birthday cake.  Banapple is already popular after being featured in a lot of TV shows, magazines and news papers.

Banapple offers a cute and homey ambiance.  It is bright and cozy.

The outdoor of Banapple reminds me of a garden dinner with candle lights too.

My little sister swears by the Banoffie Pie and it is Banapple's specialty so we purchase one whole Banoffie Pie.

 Banoffie Pie Whole (720 php)
The Banoffie Pie was delicious!  Everything blended well together.  I've tried Banoffee Pies from ther cakeshops before and always found it too sweet.  It's the first time, I truly appreciated a Banoffie Pie.

Tsinoy Foodies Verdict
Banapple's Banoffie Pie is a must try!  Banapple's cake prices are affordable and very presentable.  The serving size is also generous. The cake was enjoyed by all of us and there were a lot of it left after our first seating.

Nectar Restaurant: My Sweet Beginning with Wine Pairings (Closed)

Nectar Restaurant is a new establishment found at the corner of Salcedo and Benavidez, Makati City.  The restaurant is easy to spot as it has glass windows with hexagon glass stains surrounding every part of it.

Nectar Restaurant offers great ambiance for romantic dates, parties and business meetings.  Nectar Restaurant offers several function rooms for privacy.  The place has a elegant and cozy interior.  It also has paintings hanged on its walls.  According to the owner Robert Joseph, the paintings have their own wine pairings as well.

I love its wine bar with hexagon wine shelvings.
Cake Chiller
Wine Dispensing Station

It has a Wine Dispensing Station where you enjoy wine depending on your budget and preference.  You just have to get the access card from the counter and choose whether you want to try the wine for just a taste, half or full.  It's amazing that you can taste wine for such a minimal amount.

Nectar Restaurant distinguishes itself from other wine restaurants because it educates its customers about wine through its wine personality test.  I found out that my personality is the same as the trait of a Cabernet Savignon.  The servers are also knowledgeable about wine so feel free to ask.

I never considered myself as a wine drinker.  In fact, I only drink wine during our family New Year's Eve toast.  We always have red wine in the fridge but I never bothered to drink a glass or two.  I didn't know how much wine could influence food until the owner Mr. Robert Joseph let us pair their food with their house wines.  This marks my sweet beginning with wine pairings. =)

Spanaconchitas (295 php)
The Spanaconchitas are Greek spanakopitas filled with Spanish chorizos served with sour cream dip.  I find these enjoyable to snack on.

Burguittos (275 php)
The Burguittos are Nectar's unique version of bite-sized burgers.  The bottom is a slice of baguette then topped with lettuce, meaty patty, tomatoes, fried quail egg and potato allumettes.  Imagine a burger that's cripsy, flavorful and meaty!  Yum!

 Crispy Toro (480 php)
The Crispy Toro is a beef shank that's crispy on the outside and tenderlicious on the inside.  This is best coupled with red wine for a more wholesome meaty sensation.  Everyone loved this dish!

 Aglio Olio Gamberi (425 php)
The Aglio Olio Gamberi has a simple garlic flavor and topped with three tiger prawns.  I usually find oil-based pasta difficult to finish but the Aglio Olio Gamberi will make you want to taste more and more of its garlic taste.  Try this out with white wine. =)

Burgers, Sandwiches & Wraps
 La Mancha Burger (590 php)
The La Mancha Burger is a minced steak burger patty topped with pickled bell peppers, lettuces, sundried tomato pasta, crispy fried beef flakes and gruyer cheese sandwiched between wheat buns.  It is served with potato wedges.  This is definitely one of the best burgers that I have ever tasted!  This is awesome both in taste and texture.  This huge burger is advised for sharing.

Main Course
Pork Tenderloin ala Plancha (395 php)
The Pork Tenderloin ala Plancha is pork tenderloin with plum sauce, braised red cabbage and barley faux rissoto.  I loved everything that's on the plate.  The pork tenderloin goes well with the plum sauce.  The red cabbage is delicious!  For the first time in my entire life, I enjoyed barley.  I didn't even know it was barley because it felt like pasta.

The desserts served are not on the menu yet but were served during their valentine promo.

Chocolate Climax (175 php)
The Chocolate Climax is chocolate mousse topped with rich dark chocolate.  This is my best picked among the desserts we've tried.

Mango Madness (175 php)
The Mango Madnes is a unique mango cake because the texture is a hybrid of chiffon and mousse.

Apple Tartatin (175 php)

The Apple Tartatin is layered puff pastry filled with apple slices in each layer topped with whipped cream and caramel sauce.

Tsinoy Foodies Verdict
Nectar Restaurant offers great food and affordable wine selections.   Nectar Restaurant's dishes comes in great proportions and use the finest ingredients.  Price may be expensive but you get what you pay for.  Because they are wine distributors, Nectar Restaurant is capable of serving wine cheaper than its competitors.  The servers are courteous, friendly and accommodating.

This establishment is closing.  I received this email today (July 5, 2012):
To our most loyal customers,
It is with a heavy heart that I inform you that NECTAR Restaurant will be opening its doors for the last time on Friday, July 6, 2012. Financial difficulties have forced us to cease operations indefinitely. We thank you for your unbridled support, patronage and, above all, your friendship over this past year. We invite you to dine at our establishment and experience NECTAR one final time. We will sorely miss you all.
