Cello's Doughnuts & Dips: Cocktail Donuts

Cello's Doughnuts & Dips is a humble doughnut store just in front of De La Salle University Manila.  I can recall so many days of my college life bringing home a box of doughnuts from Cello's Doughnuts & Dips .  This is our families favorite doughnut.

What we love about Cello's Doughnuts is that their doughnuts are always served fresh.  It so so soft and moist.  It is really fun to bite as your teeth sinks into the softness of its dough.

I usually only order the Cheese Flavor because for us that is the best!  I love the Cello's cheese powder sprinkled on top of their honey glaze.  I love how the saltiness of the cheese and the sweetness of the honey glaze forms a great balance.

I ordered an assortment just to show you that they many flavors.  Second to the Cheese Flavor, I'd recommend the Oreo Flavor.  The fine bits of the Oreo cookies on top of the honey glaze   is a masterpiece.  It is also irresistible for an Oreo lover like me.

How about you?  What's your favorite Cello's Doughnut?

Tsinoy Foodies Verdict
Cello's Doughnuts & Dips offers a unique doughnut experience that is unmatched by even the more famous brands.  It has its own distinguishing flavor selections that are unlike any other.  I highly recommend the Cheese Flavor.   Cello's Doughnuts & Dips pricing is on the average.  Given the quality of its doughnuts, it is definitely worth it!

Chinese Tikoy with Egg Recipe

To celebrate Chinese New Year, it is important to have Chinese Tikoy (Chinese Rice Cake) at the table.  Why?  The Chinese Tikoy is round so it symbolizing money and prosperity.  It is also sticky so it can bring togetherness within the family.  Aside from that the stickiness can also attract money.

So how do you cook you Chinese Tikoy?  Whether its the white, brown or flavored Chinese Tikoy, there are several ways of cooking it.  I've tried different flavors with this recipe such as the Ube, Langka, Pandan and Corn.  But, I really only like eating the brown Tikoy.

Let me share with you one of the ways I cook our Chinese Tikoy at home.  Since Chinese New Year last for weeks, we cook with this recipes over and over. =)  Of course, we don't eat one whole Chinese Tikoy in one seating, we refrigerate the rest.  But, if you forget to refrigerate and there are mold sprouting out.  Don't worry.  They say the Chinese Tikoy taste better when it is already infected with molds.  Just wipe of the molds with oil and it is good to go.  =)

Chinese Tikoy with Egg Recipe

Ingredients:
1 Whole Large Chinese Tikoy
20 Eggs
1/4 Cup Cooking Oil

Instructions:

Step 1: Crack and beat eggs in a bowl

Step 2: Slice the Chinese Tikoy in small 1 inch by 2 inch rectangles.  Thickness depends on your preference.

Step 3: Heat pan with cooking oil and wait until hot enough.  (For healthier option use non-stick pan and use less oil)
Step 4: Dip each sliced one by one and place it on the pan until the whole pan is occupied.  Each slice shall not touch the rest of the slices nor is it to be placed on top of one another.

Step 5: When egg coating is already golden brown, place it into a strainer so it won't be too oily.

Step 6: Repeat steps 4 and 5 for a new batch until all slices are cooked.

Army Navy Crossroads: Happy Bunker Dining over Burgers and Burritos

I first glanced over Crossroads when I had a buffet at Best Western's Premier Hotel F1 Restaurant. (see previous entry)  Crossroads is a highly visible venue at Fort Bonifacio Global City that houses a number of restaurants such as Army Navy Crossroads.  The place has an adequate parking space.  It is also just beside the football field where the Azkals practice everyday until 11 p.m.

Army Navy Crossroads has a clean spacious bunker-like ambiance.  The place is pretty cool!

Army Navy has only one mission and that is for their customers to "Come in Happy, Walk Out Happy".

Food

Burger

You know how competitive guys are when they are challenged right?  As expected Kurt just had to order the Bully Boy Burger.

 Bully Boy Burger (250 php)
The Bully Boy Burger is composed of triple quarter-pounder natural beef patties topped with fresh crispy lettuce, tomatoes, onions, tomatoes, onions, ketchup snuggled between toasted Sesame Seed Kaiser Buns.  Army Navy's beef patties taste like natural meat and they are naturally juicy.  Kurt enjoyed his burger to the last bite.

Sides
freedom fries
 Freedom Fries (65 php)
Every time I dined at Army Navy, I always had Onion Rings.  It just occured to me that I have never tried their Freedom Fries.  Unlike french fries from other food chains, the Freedom Fries is thin like a shoe string.  The flavorings is also not too strong or spicy so you tend to nibble and enjoy more.  It is very addictive!

Burrito

Carnitas (Pork) Burrito (165 php)
Like the burgers, the Burritos are also wrapped in foil and served over wax paper and a round metal dish tray.  The Burritos also comes with the salsa, Army Navy special sauce and a slice of lime.
pork burrito
Carnitas (Pork) Burrito (165 php)
The Carnitas (Pork) Burrito had some pork cubes, Spanish rice, beans, onions, lettuce and cilantro wrapped in flour tortilla.  It's my first time to try pork and it was good especially with the chili sauce and lime.  The flour tortilla is soft and the ingredients are offered at the right amount.

chili sauce
Chili Verde and Chili Rojo
The Chili Verde and Chili Rojo goes really well with my burrito.  The Chili Rojo tastes like "Tabasco".  But, I liked the Chili Verde more because it gives the spice without any other taste.

steak burrito
Steak Burrito (165 php)
The Steak Burrito is similar to the Carnitas (Pork) Burrito except that it has chunky steak bits.

Drinks
libertea
 Libertea Regular (55 php)
The Libertea is a freshly brewed tea.  It is very tasty and not too sweet.  It's pretty good.

Tsinoy Foodies Verdict
Army Navy Crossroads is a fun place to hang out for some burgers and burritos.  Burger or burrito, it depends on your preference.  For us, we both agree that we like their burgers more.  It's best to order along some side dish and Libertea.  I love the service at Army Navy Crossroads because its quick to serve.  The staffs are also friendly.

Sinfully By Makati Shangri-La at Greenbelt 5

Last month, we were supposed to be rushing our way home but our eyes was suddenly captivated by the alluring sign "Sinfully by Makati Shangri-La".
sinfully
Notice that all those who come in are women? =)
sinfully

Once we entered, there was no turning back.  It was certainly our kind of place surrounded by all the beautiful cakes, chocolates, sweet treats and pastries.

Cakes

Emoticon Cake
They had a large LCD touch screen display where you can create your own emoticon cake design.  You are given the option to choose the type of cake and then emoticon.  At the end, you have to confirm your order.  It's a wonderful gift idea right?

Is this a cake or a bag? =)
All their cakes are very creative!  I especially liked the cake bag idea.

Praline Box of 10 (60 php/piece)
At first, my sister only wanted to try one praline but the sales lady told us to get six because when you buy six or ten, you get a free box.  The sales lady was so nice to explain to us each praline that we couldn't help but buy six of them.  We're so glad we did because their pralines are delicious!  I actually thought we would bring it home to eat but upon reaching the car, everyone wanted to try out theirs.
kiss pralines
Kiss (58 php)
My little sister chose the Kiss with the lightest color.  Although the kiss was very attractive and cute, it was the least special among the pralines we bought.  It was only milk chocolate with amaretto and coffee.  The Lemon Praline was tangy lemon with dark chocolate.  The Mhiel looked like the Lemon Praline except that the square was color orange and had a honey taste.  The Au Jasmine Praline was dark chocolate with the fragrant sweet taste of jasmine tea.  I never imagined they could go so well.  The Piment Praline was milk chocolate with three kinds of peppers.  I forgot the name of the last one we tried but it was very good.  It was dark chocolate on the outside and oozing melted chocolate on the inside.

Macaroons
macaroons
Macaroons (45 php)
We are not really fond of Macaroons because it is usually sweet due to the meringue.  But, enticed with the colors, we decided to buy two: Red and the Blue.  When we where already at the car, we tried the Macaroons and instantly regretted we only bought two.  They were smooth and refined in texture and were not too sweet at all.  We also realized that each color had different flavors.  The Red was raspberry which was delicious.  The Blue was mint.  We loved the mint!  It was so cool and refreshing.

Pastries

We also bought their pastries. I just love pretzels!  It was pretty good.

Tsinoy Foodies Verdict
Sinfully by Makati Shangri-La offers really fine smooth great tasting pralines.   Although it is a bit pricey, they are delicious and attractive that I highly recommend it as a gift for your female partners.  The Macaroons are also a must try!  As for the cakes, I shall return for those.  But, I'm afraid I might just get tempted to get more pralines. =p

Shiok: The Inconspicuous Affordable Singapore-Malaysian Restaurant at Fort

Many have the impression that restaurants at the Fort Bonifacio Global City area is expensive when there are actually a lot of affordable options around.  A few months ago, we discovered Shiok.  It is an affordable Singapore-Malaysian Restaurant by the 2nd street.  It may seem inconspicuous because you have to enter the parking lot to see it and it is amongst establishments like 7-11 and a barber shop.
shiok fort
Glancing from the outside, we initially thought Shiok was a Chinese restaurant because "Shiok" means "cheap" in Fukien.  But, as we saw the menu, we found at that it serves Singaporean and Malaysian dishes.  The place is very clean and simple with only a few tables.

It's the first time we've encountered Shiok but we noticed they have a featured article plastered on their wall.

Food

Hainanese Chicken Rice

Hainanese Chicken Rice Whole Chicken (900 php)

Chicken Rice
The Hainanese Chicken Rice came with Chicken Rice and Clear broth soup.  I think the Hainanese Chicken Rice is a bit expensive compared to their other offerings.  The chicken was not fat and large and the taste was nothing special.  I also assumed that the  Hainanese Chicken Rice Whole Chicken was meant for sharing like the one we had at Chicken Rice Shop (see separate entry).  But, it only came with one Chicken Rice so we had to order additional Chicken Rice for the rest of us.

Hainanese Chicken Rice
spicy pineapple
Spicy Pineapple Fish (150 php)
The Spicy Pineapple Fish is crispy dory fish fillet with spicy, sweet and sour sauce topped with pineapple bits.  It was pretty good.
fried fish with eggplant
Fried Fish with Eggplant (180 php)
I like the Fried Fish with Eggplant more that the the Spicy Pineapple Fish because it is also dory fish but has more sauce.  The eggplant is a great complement too.

Noodles
char kwey teow
Char Kwey Teow (160 php)
The Char Kwey Teow was delicious!  I enjoyed it because I could appreciate the taste of all ingredients perfectly.

nonya laksa
Nonya Laksa (325 php)
The Nonya Laksa is served with bean sprouts, large prawns, fish cakes, tofu and some herbs.  It was spicy with a coconut milk taste.  Because of its strong taste and large serving size, we found this difficult to finish.
fishball kwey teow
Fishball Kwey Teow (185 php)
Honestly, it was our first time to try the Fishball Kwey Teow.  We expected it to be somewhat similar to the Char Kwey Teow.  But, we were surprised that it is a noodle soup dish.  It had a light and refreshing taste.

Prata
roti prata
 Roti Prata (55 php)
I love Pratas so the Roti Prata is always a must order for me.  Shiok's Roti Prata was done right!  It was served hot, crispy on the outside and soft and chewy on the inside.

murtabak
Murtabak (85 php)
The Murtabak is the same Roti Prata with ground beef curry, egg and garlic.  The curry was not that strong and it went well with the Roti Prata.

The Cheese Prata is the same Roti Prata with cheddar cheese.  It reminds me of quesadilla.

Roasts Ala Carte

The Crispy Pork is actually Lechon Macau.  It came with hoisin sauce and mustard.  The skin was crispy and the meat was soft and tender.

The Soy Chicken Set came in a generous serving size with a pechay as side dish.  It also came with rice and iced tea.  The Soy Chicken is tasty and tender.

Malaysian Specialties
We wanted to try the Smashed Chicken because we were curious if it was the same with our local pinikpikan chicken but it was not available at the time.

Baked Curry Rice
hainanese chicken curry rice
 Hainanese Chicken Curry (250 php)
The Hainanese Chicken Curry was the best dish we ordered that night!  It was very very delicious!  I don't even like curry but I'd crave for this any day.  The melted cheese, the light curry taste and the tender, juicy chicken is perfect!  I highly recommend this dish.

Side Dish
boychoy
Bokchoy with Oyster Sauce (120 php)
A meal for us is never complete without vegetables.  We ordered the Bokchoy with Oyster Sauce.  It was fragrant because of all those garlic bits.

Beverages
teh c
 Teh-C (60 php)
In their menu, they indicated Teh O/C.  But, the waiter doesn't appear to know the distinction between two.  When we ordered Teh-C, the server repeated our order and he stated Teh O/C.  We were all surprised because Teh-O meant without milk and only sugar while Teh-C was with evaporated milk.  But, we did get our Teh-C. =) It was really good!  It had a strong tea taste and it was not too sweet.  I ordered this twice!

michael jackson drink
Michael Jackson (60 php)
The Michael Jackson is Soya milk with grass jelly.  At first sip, I thought the Soya milk was too strong.  It felt acidic.  It seems it was served with all the condensed milk gathered at the bottom.  A little mix and it was okay.  However, I prefer the Teh-C over this. =)

Tsinoy Foodies Verdict
Shiok is certainly  cheap if you know what to order.  Some of the dishes are really cheap while the others are expensive.  If you're dining alone, the baked curry rice and rice sets are really affordable.  On the other hand, I think you can save more if you're in group because most of their dishes are good for sharing.  I would certainly come back for their Hainanese Chicken Curry and Teh-C whenever I can!  Food service was fast and the staffs are very nice and friendly too!
